2021: Gilbert saw action as a backup inside linebacker and on special teams in 3 games (Colorado, Arizona State, UCLA) as a walk-on junior in 2021. He did not make a tackle.
2020: Gilbert appeared in all 6 games as a reserve inside linebacker and on special teams as a walk-on sophomore in 2020. He did not make a tackle.
2019: Gilbert was a backup inside linebacker as a redshirt freshman in 2019. Overall in 2019 while appearing in 2 games (Arizona, California), he had 1 tackle (against Arizona).
2018: Gilbert redshirted as a reserve inside linebacker as a first-year freshman walk-on in 2018. He won USC’s Service Team Co-Defensive Player of the Year Award.
HIGH SCHOOL: He made 2017 All-CIF Division 1 first team as a senior linebacker at St. John Bosco High in Bellflower (Calif.). He had 61 tackles, including 6.5 for losses (with 5 sacks), plus 3 fumble recoveries and 1 deflection in 2017.
As a 2016 junior, he had 33 tackles (with 2 sacks). Current Trojans Ralen Goforth, Jude Wolfe, Chris Steele, Will Rose, Kobe Pepe, Danny Lockhart Jr., Matt Colombo and Maximus Gibbs also prepped at St. John Bosco.
He spent his 2015 sophomore season at Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach (Calif.), where he played quarterback and defensive back.
PERSONAL: He is working on a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s in global supply chain management at USC with a 3.08 GPA. His mother, Caryl Smith Gilbert, is Georgia’s director of track and field after serving as USC’s director of track and field from 2014 through 2021 (the Women of Troy won the 2018 and 2021 NCAA outdoor titles) and previously being Central Florida’s women’s head coach (2008-13) and a women’s assistant at Tennessee (2003-07), Alabama (2000-02) and Penn State (1998-99) following an All-American sprinting career at UCLA. His father, Greg Gilbert, was a senior director of development in the USC athletic department who played linebacker at Alabama (1985-88) and in the NFL with the Chicago Bears (1989), Indianapolis Colts (1990), Oakland Raiders (1990-91) and Philadelphia Eagles (1991) before playing in the World League of American Football with the San Antonio Riders (1991) and Barcelona Dragons (1991-92).
