2019: Makaula saw action as a backup safety and Nickelback as a first-year freshman in 2019. Overall in 2019 while appearing in 4 games (Notre Dame, Arizona, Arizona State, California), he had 6 tackles and 2 deflections. He had a tackle at Notre Dame, 3 tackles and a deflection against Arizona and 2 tackles and a deflection at California. He was able to redshirt.
HIGH SCHOOL: He made 2018 USA Today All-Hawaii second team, PrepStar All-Western Region and Honolulu Star-Advertiser All-State second team as a senior safety and cornerback at Punahou School in Honolulu (Hi.).
He also played basketball for 4 seasons at Punahou, averaging 12.4 points and 4.7 rebounds as a 2019 senior. Current Trojans Maninoa Tufono and Brad Aoki also prepped at Punahou.
