THIS YEAR: Graduate transfer Matthew Okonkwo is in his first season as a sprinter on the USC track and field team, after competing for UC Davis from 2019-22. He owns the UC Davis 200m and 400m records. His sister, Chioma, is also a sprinter on the USC track and field team.
2022: Okonkwo ran 21.07 (+2.0) in the 200m at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds on May 25, to break the 15-year-old UC Davis record in the event. He won his second consecutive Big West 200m title by running 21.08 (+2.7w) on May 14…he also placed third in the 400m with a time of 47.20 and ran on the sixth-place 4x100m and seventh-place 4x400m relays at the conference meet. He ran a wind-aided 200m PR of 20.89 (+2.3w) to win at the Causeway Classic on April 29. He was named to the 2022 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.
2021: He was named the Big West Co-Men’s Track Athlete of the Year as he won both the 200m (21.23) and the 400m titles (47.26). He advanced to the NCAA West Prelims in the 400m where he ran 48.13 to finish 43rd. Okonkwo set the school 400m record with a time of 46.36 to win at the Red and Black Invite on April 2. He earned Big West Male Track Athlete of the Week (March 3) after a wind-aided 21.83 in 200m and 4x100 win at Sac State Tri-Team Challenge.
2020: Competed in 400 (49.75) and 4x100 relay (41.62) at Cal Opener before COVID-19 pandemic halted the remainder of the season.
2019: Led the Aggies in the 400m with a time of 47.47 at Cal Opener on March 2, sixth in school history at the time. He placed 15th with a time of 49.71 at the Big West Conference Championships.
HIGH SCHOOL: Okonkwo is a 2018 graduate of Murrieta Mesa HS in Murrieta, Calif. He ran the 100m, 200m and 400m for three seasons. He helped Murrieta Mesa win the California State Track Meet team title… His senior year, he ran 10.7 in the 100m, 21.4 in the 200m and 47.4 in the 400m.
PERSONAL: Matthew was born on March 19, 2000…His parents are Appolonia Ugonna-Okonkwo and Mark Okonkwo… Appolonia was on the track & field team at Cal State San Bernardino, and Mark on the UCLA team… He has an older brother, Jonathan, and a younger sister, Chioma, who also competes for USC… Proudest personal accomplishment is winning State and being the first leg for the nation-leading 4x400 high school time in 2018… Favorite movie is Transformers: Dark of the Moon…He graduated with a degree in Psychology from UC Davis, and after college plans to council struggling or troubled youth through struggles in life.
