Bio
THIS YEAR: Junior Vienna Gao is in her second season as a member of the USC track and field and cross country teams.
2022-23: Gao joined the program as a sophomore and ran in three cross country races for the Trojans, becoming one of the team’s top runners. She was one of USC’s scoring runners in each meet in which she competed, finishing no lower than fourth among the Trojans. She set her 6K PR of 22:56.9 in placing third among the USC athletes at the Pac-12 Championships on Oct. 28. She ran in two meets during the track season, running the 1500m and 5000m at the Aztec Invitational and the 3000m at the Trojan Invitational.
HIGH SCHOOL: Gao is a 2021 graduate of the Nueva Upper School in San Mateo, Calif. She competed in both cross country and track and field. She also has a marathon best of 3:23.59 and a half-marathon best of 1:25. Her marathon time was first among women aged 16-19 at the 2021 L.A. Marathon.
PERSONAL: Vienna was born on March 19, 2003 in San Francisco, Calif....Her parents are Jessica and Jeffrey Gao and she has one sister, Aria...Vienna lived in Shanghai, China from age 4-11..She is an accomplished pianist and has played for 14 years...Her hobbies include listening to the Jazz Channel, listening to podcasts and drawing...Her sports heroes are Eliud Kipchoge, who proves with his sub-2 hour marathons that no human is limited, and Molly Seidel...Says broccoli is her favorite food...After earning her undergraduate degrees, she would like to become a professional marathon runner and pursue a PhD in Neuroscience. The USC Presidential Scholar is a majoring in Neuroscience with a Mathematics minor.
