THIS SEASON: Kaito Onishi, a 2021 senior, looks to regain the form from his sophomore All-American season. The 2018 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and 2019 All-Pac-12 first teamer is one of the top golfers in the country and will be again be a key veteran on this year’s squad.
2020: Onishi was fourth on the team in stroke average (73.00) as a 2020 junior, posting one top 10 finish in four events. He finished a season-best tie for third at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate at 5-under 211 (70-73-68), the event featuring his two best rounds of the season. He tied for 43rd at the Southern Highlands Invitational at 7-over 223 (77-75-71), helping USC win with two counting scores … He played in the 2020 U.S. Amateur, but did not make the cut.
2019: Onishi earned PING All-American honorable mention and All-Pac-12 first team honors as a 2019 sophomore, finishing second on the team in stroke average (71.55) and rounds in the 60s (13) … He posted five top 10 finishes on the year, including a third at the Fighting Illini Invitational at 3-under 207 (68-69-70) and a tie for third at The Goodwin at 2-under 208 (69-66-73) … Onishi was also 3-under with a tie for ninth at the Saint Mary's Invitational (210=73-71-66), even (216=69-72-75) to tie for 10th at the Southwestern Invitational and tied for fifth at the Western Intercollegiate at 4-under 206 (69-67-70) … Onishi qualified for the 2019 U.S. Amateur and The Players Amateur, but did not make either cut … He tied for 12th at the Sunnehanna Amateur at par 280 (70-73-70-67).

Onishi (71.85), who finished second on the team in stroke average, had a mid-season run of five straight rounds under 70 and finished second on the team with eight rounds in the 60s. Included in the early-season Arnold Palmer Cup rankings for the international team (15th), he had a pair of top 4 finishes, four top 20s and seven results in the top 28 … Onishi tied for second at the Saint Mary’s Invitational at 8-under 205 (73-63-69), his second round 63 featuring six birdies and an eagle without a bogey … Onishi followed it with a tie for fourth at the Amer Ari Invitational to kickstart the spring season at 11-under 205 (69-67-69) … He tied for 13th at the Pac-12 Championships with a 4-under 280 (75-64-71-70), helping Troy to the team title. He also tied for 20th at the Southern Highlands Collegiate at 2-over 218 (78-71-69) … He saw some international action in his native Japan before returning to school in the fall, taking 18th at the Shigeo Nagashima Invitational SEGA SAMMY Cup and 62nd at the Chubu Open. Stateside, he tied for 19th at the Sunnehanna Amateur.
HIGH SCHOOL: Onishi, originally from Japan who prepped at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., was a 2016 Rolex Junior All-American honorable mention selection and a 2015 Rolex Junior All-American second teamer … Shortly before starting his first semester at USC, Onishi played in the 2017 U.S. Amateur, qualifying for match play. He tied for 29th in stroke play at 1-over 141 (69-72) before falling to current teammate Cheng Jin in the first round of match play, 4&3. He played in the 2017 U.S. Junior Amateur as well, also tying for 29th in stroke play at 1-over (65-78) and reaching the round of 16 before bowing out. He tied for seventh at the Rice Planters Amateur in June at 1-under 215 (73-67-75) … He won the 2016 27th Annual Sea Pines Junior Heritage, fighting off severe winds in Hilton Head, S.C., with a 145 (74-71). He tied for third at the 2016 AJGA Haas Family Invitational with a 280 (67-72-67-74), was seventh at the 2016 Terra Cotta Invitational and was eighth at the AJGA TaylorMade-addidas Golf Junior. He reached the round of 64 at the 2016 U.S. Junior Amateur … In 2015, he posted three top 10 junior finishes, including a third at the Western Junior Championship at 282 (74-71-68-69), and he had four top 10s in 2014, including a sixth at the Callaway Junior Championship.
