No. 24 USC Men’s Golf Surges on Day Two of the Southwestern Invitational

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. — Boosted by a strong round from sophomore Jack Buchanan, the No. 24 USC men's golf team surged up to a tie for second place in the second round of the Southwestern Invitational, held at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
The Trojans began the day in seventh place but moved up to second place with a 272 (-8) at the par-70, 6,753-yard course. Jack Buchanan, Jaden Dumdumaya and Antonio Safa had below-par rounds to help the Trojans move into a tie with San Diego State with 560s (E). USC's 272 (-8) was the second-best round of the day, trailing host school, No. 15 Pepperdine, which had a 271 (-9) to remain in the lead with a 544 (-16) on its home course.
Sophomore Jack Buchanan fired a 66 (-4), tying his best round of the year with a strong back side that featured three birdies, plus an eagle on No. 15. All told, he had five birdies and an eagle with just three bogeys in the second round. He is now in a two-way tie for 12th place with a two-round score of 140 (E).
Fellow sophomore Jaden Dumdumaya moved into a tie for 20th place thanks to his 68 (-2). He remained at par for the front side before finishing the day with three birdies in the last five holes on the back side.
Senior Antonio Safa also had a 68 (-2) and moved up into an eight-way tie for 47th. He had three birdies and two bogeys on the front side and finished with five bogeys and an eagle on No. 15, but found trouble with a double-bogey on No. 12 and a bogey on No. 17. He is the only Trojan with two eagles in the tournament so far.
Junior Nicolas Dominguez leads the Trojans in 11th place with a two-round score of 139 (-1). He found trouble on the front side with two bogeys and a double-bogey on No. 7, but made up for those mistakes with five birdies on the back side to finish with a 70 (E). So far, he is the only Trojan with two rounds at par or better in this tournament.
Graduate senior Luke Stock was in the top 20 but fell back into a tie for 47th place with a 77 (+7). He finished with one birdie on No. 5 but also had four bogeys and two double-bogeys.
