Nicolas Dominguez tied for ninth place for his second top-10 finish of the season.
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. — The No. 26 USC men's golf team tied for fifth place at the Southwestern Invitational, held at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. on Wednesday, Jan. 28.
On a day that saw just one team have a below-par final round, the Trojans began in a tie for second place but slid down into a tie for fifth with San Diego in the final round at the par-70, 6,753-yard course. USC finished with an 858 (+18). Host school No. 15 Pepperdine won with an 829 (-11) on its home course, while San Diego State's Harry Takis was the medalist with a 203 (-7).
"Being resilient is something we're all getting better at," Junior Nicolas Dominguez said. "We can do a better job, but you can tell that this team is resilient and we work hard for the results we get. Of course, it wasn't the result we wanted, but we have to keep working and holding each other accountable."
Dominguez tied for ninth with a 210 (E) for his second top-10 finish of the season. He began the final round with three birdies on the front side, but found trouble with a triple-bogey on No. 7. But Dominguez bounced back with two birdies in the first three holes of the back side, which was the second time this tournament that he was able to bounce back from multiple bogeys. He fired a 71 (+1) in the final round.
"My mental game was good this tournament," Dominguez said. "Yesterday I was five over through seven, but came back. Today I started pretty well before the triple-bogey, but I came back again. I feel like I did a really good job of just doing what I'm supposed to do."
Sophomore Jack Buchanan finished in a tie for 20th with a 215 (+5). Buchanan stayed at par after the front side with one birdie and a bogey, but found trouble in the back side with three bogeys and a double-bogey on No. 16. His final round score of 75 (+5) was USC's second-best round on Wednesday.
Fellow sophomore Jaden Dumdumaya finished in a tie for 30th place with 218 (+8). He had two birdies, six bogeys and one double-bogey, giving him a 76 (+6) in the final round.
Graduate senior Luke Stock finished in a tie for 49th with a 224 (+14). His 76 (+6) on Wednesday was his second-best round of the tournament.
Senior Antonio Safa finished in a tie for 61st with a 227 (+17). He finished the tournament with an 79 (+9) final round.
The Trojans will have over one month to prepare for The Desimone Invitational, held at Lake Merced Golf Course in Daly City, Calif. from March 9-10. All pertinent updates can be found on the men's golf team's schedule page on usctrojans.com.
