CAREER: He has 2 sacks for minus 11 yards in his career while appearing in 7 games.
2020: McClain will battle for playing time at outside linebacker as a sophomore in 2020.
2019: McClain saw action at outside linebacker as a redshirt freshman in 2019. Overall in 2019 while appearing in 5 games (Arizona, Oregon, Arizona State, California, UCLA), he had 2 sacks for minus 11 yards. He hurt his knee in 2019 fall camp and had arthroscopic surgery, sidelining him for the first 4 games (Fresno State, Stanford, BYU, Utah). He then dislocated his right shoulder against Arizona (while making a sack) and missed the Colorado game. He had 2019 post-season shoulder surgery.
2018: McClain saw brief action at outside linebacker and on special teams as a first-year freshman in 2018. He appeared in 2 games in 2018 (California, Notre Dame), allowing him to redshirt. He did not make a tackle.
HIGH SCHOOL: He made 2017 PrepStar All-Western Region, Tacoma News Tribune Western 100, Cal-Hi Sports All-State second team, Los Angeles Times All-Area, Orange County Register All-Orange County first team and All-Trinity League Defensive Player of the Year as a senior linebacker and tight end at JSerra Catholic High in San Juan Capistrano (Calif.). In 2017, he had 45 tackles, including 18 sacks, 1 fumble recovery and 1 forced fumble on defense and 9 receptions for 175 yards (19.4 avg) with 1 TD on offense. Current Trojan Peter Esparza also prepped at JSerra.
He also played basketball at JSerra, averaging 8.4 points and 4.6 rebounds as a 2017 junior.
Before that, he attended Santa Margarita High in Rancho Santa Margarita. As a 2016 junior there, he had 51 tackles, including 8 for a loss (with 7.5 sacks), 1 deflection, 2 forced fumbles and 1 blocked field goal.
As a 2015 sophomore, he had 11 tackles, including 2 for losses.
PERSONAL: He is a communication major at USC. His brother, Munir, is a sophomore wide receiver at USC who also prepped at JSerra. His grandfather, Lawrence Williams, played basketball at UNLV and then as an All-Conference player on the 1977 Texas Southern team that won the NAIA championship.
