No. 14 USC Opens Season in Lone Star State

The Women of Troy will face Texas State on Friday and No. 4 Texas on Sunday
LOS ANGELES – The 14th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (0-0) begins its 2019 campaign on the road where the Trojans face Texas State (0-0) and No. 4 Texas (0-0). The Trojans are 36-7 in season openers and are 3-0 when they open the season in the Lone Star State. In road openers, the Women of Troy are 34-9 and have won nine straight since 2010.

The Trojans are loaded at the pins and return a pair of All-American outside hitters in senior Khalia Lanier (4.27 kps in 2018) and junior Brooke Botkin (4.39 kps). They will receive sets from the 2018 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Raquel Lázaro. All four of USC's top attackers return from last season. On the right side, senior Emily Baptista (2.95 kps) is back and in the middle, senior Jasmine Gross (1.93 kps) returns. Gross also led the Trojans with 1.41 blocks per set a year ago.

Among new Women of Troy, USC welcomes MB Madison Horin, OH Kalen Owes, and OPP Emilia Weske as part of a heralded freshman class. Defensively, the Trojans will add the services of two-time beach volleyball All-American Abril Bustamante and see the return of senior libero Jenna Adams from injury.

USC earned its 36th berth into the NCAA championship tournament but fell in the second round. Setter Raquel Lázaro was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and junior outside hitter Brooke Botkin became the program's 42nd all-time All-American.
