No. 14 USC Battles Bobcats to Four-Set Win

The Women of Troy improved to 37-7 all-time in season openers with a 3-1 victory over Texas State
SAN MARCOS, Texas – The No. 14-ranked USC women's volleyball team (1-0) dropped the first set, but came back to earn a 3-1 win (26-28, 25-15, 25-17, 25-23) over Texas State (1-1) at Strahan Arena in the 2019 season opener on Friday, Aug. 30.

- Sr. OH Khalia Lanier led all players with 18.0 points earned on 17 kills (7e, 40att, .250) and two blocks to go with seven digs. Lanier's 17 kills give her 1,476 in her career, which now ranks 10th all-time in USC history.
- So. setter Raquel Lázaro put up 46 assists and had eight digs, four kills, two service aces, and two blocks.
- Jr. OH Brooke Botkin posted her 14th-career double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs.
- Sr. libero Jenna Adams returned for her first match since the end of 2017 and posted 20 digs with three assists.
- Sr. MB Jasmine Gross scored a career-best five service aces and finished with 13.5 points with six kills and five blocks.
- For the Bobcats, Cheyenne Huskey had 13 kills but hit .000. Kenedi Rutherford and Courtney Heiser each had 10 kills apiece. Heiser had the double-double with 11 digs.
- The Women of Troy led by as many as three points on several occasions in the first set, but were caught at 20-all on a 3-0 run by the Bobcats. USC fought off set point three times before Texas State secured a 28-26 win on back-to-back kills by Huskey. Lanier had eight kills and Botkin had five in the first frame alone.
- USC seized control early in the second and rolled out to a four-point lead at 14-10; and doubled it to eight at 21-13. Gross pushed USC to set point on her kill at 24-15 before an attack error put a 25-15 win on the board for the Trojans.
- In a flash, USC created a 12-4 lead in the third. The Trojans were never threatened and walked away with a 2-1 lead in the match on a 25-17 win. USC hit only .156, but out-played the Bobcats, who hit .026 in the loss.
- Texas State was the aggressor in the fourth and looked like it would force a fifth set when it led, 18-11, on three straight kills. Sparked by Gross's serving and kills from Lanier, the Women of Troy got back into the match and trailed by just three at 20-17. Texas State responded to get a five-point lead at 23-18, but Botkin went back to serve out a 7-0 run to help the Trojans secure a 25-23 win and the match. The Women of Troy used a 14-5 barrage to seal the victory.
- The Women of Troy have a day between matches before they head to Austin, Texas, to face No. 4-ranked Texas (1-0) on Sunday, Sept. 1, at Gregory Gymnasium. The match will be shown live on the Longhorn Network.
- USC improved to 3-0 all-time against Texas State.
- The Women of Troy improved to 37-7 in all-time season openers and to 26-6 when the opener is played on the road or at a neutral location. USC also improved to 35-9 in road openers.
- USC went to 30-4 all-time in matches played in the state of Texas and to 4-0 in season openers played in the Lone Star State. The Trojans also improved to 40-5 all-time against teams from the state of Texas.
- USC used all four of its true freshmen and had two start the match (MB Madison Horin, DS Keila Barra).
- Sr. libero Jenna Adams donned the jersey in the first three sets before Barra wore the off color in the fourth frame.
