Trojan senior fires second-round 65 to take share of first.
No. 6 USC and world amateur No. 1 Justin Suh each opened the defense of their 2018 conference titles today, the Trojans finishing 36 holes in fourth but in striking distance while Troy's senior standout is tied for first after the 2019 Pac-12 Championships opener Monday (April 22) at the Eugene (Ore.) C.C.
The Trojans, in the six-play, five-count format, combined for a two-round total of 3-over 713 (359-354), eight shots back of Stanford and UCLA and six behind California while Utah is fifth, three back of Troy. Host Oregon and Colorado are tied for sixth at 7-over.
Suh and USC both won the Pac-12 title by four strokes last year as Troy won its conference-best 20th championships.
The San Jose native is tied for first at 8-under 134 (69-65) in his quest for two straight crowns, caught at the end of the day by Utah's Kyler Dunkle. His round was the fourth of 65 or better this season.
The Trojan senior had a near flawless afternoon. He closed his play with a 5-under second-round back 9 that saw him finish with an eagle on the par 5 16th hole and birdies on 17 and 18. He had three birdies and the day's only bogey in the first round.
Suh now has 19 rounds in the 60s this season and has been par or better in 24 of 29 rounds, including in 16 of the past 19.
Sophomore Kaito Onishi battled his way into the top 10 at 1-under 141 (69-72). He opened with a four-birdie, two-bogey first round and used a pair of back 9 birdies in the second round to balance out his only double on the day.
Senior Sam Kim is tied for 35th at 4-over 146 (73-73). He had one first-round birdie and two more in the second to go with an eagle on 13.
Junior Kyle Suppa is tied for 41st at 5-over 147 (75-72). He rebounded from a 4-over first round with a 1-over second that saw him go 2-under on the back 9.
Sophomore Issei Tanabe is tied for 49th at 6-over 148 (76-72) while freshman Charlie Reiter is 60th at 8-over 150 (73-77).
USC will begin the third round Tuesday at 10 a.m.
