THIS SEASON: Issei Tanabe, a 2021 senior from Huntington Beach, Calif., is a third-year starter for the Trojans whose game continues to grow year-by-year.
2020: Tanabe put together another solid season for the Trojans as a 2020 junior, starting in all seven of his events while posting a career-best stroke average of 72.33 to go with five rounds in the 60s, both third-best on the team … He saved his best result for the season-finale, helping USC to a title at the Southern Highlands Invitational with a tie for ninth at 2-under 214 (71-74-69). His next best finish on the season was a tie for 21st in the opening Maui Jim Intercollegiate at 4-under 206 (70-68-68). He posted two more 68s in the Nike Golf Collegiate Invite, tying for 36th at 2-over 215 (68-79-68).
2019: Tanabe earned 2019 All-Pac-12 honorable mention notice as a sophomore, finishing third on the Trojans with a stroke average of 72.42 in 38 rounds and 12 rounds in the 60s … He posted four top 13 finishes with two in the top 4, including a USC career-best second in Troy's come-from behind win at the Saint Mary's Invitational at 8-under 205 (72-68-65) … He also tied for fourth at the Bill Cullum Invitational at 6-under 209 (69-74-66), tied for 12th at the Amer Ari Invitational at 7-under 209 (69-68-72) and tied for 13th at the National Invitational Tournament at 6-under 210 (75-66-69) … His offseason was highlighted by a 10th at the California State Open at 5-under 283 (69-69-71-74) where he finished as the top amateur. He also tied for 18th at the Monroe Invitational at 11-over 291 (70-75-77-69).
2018: Tanabe played in nine tournaments as a 2018 freshman, starting seven times, and finished with a stroke average of 73.70 to go with three rounds in the 60s … His season was highlighted by a tie for 23rd at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships where he finished at 1-under 283 (70-73-73-67), his closing round a season-best. He tied for 28th at the Southern Highlands Collegiate at 3-over 219 (77-73-69) … His 2018 summer was topped by a tie for 23rd at the California State Open with a 287 (76-69-69-73).
HIGH SCHOOL: Tanabe, who prepped at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, Calif., became the first Mater Dei player to win the Trinity League championship with 1-under 141 (71-70) as a 2016 junior. In 2015, he won the Toyota Tour Cup Series event at the Carlton Oaks G.C. with a 142 (72-70) … He had three 2015 top 15 AJGA finishes, including a fifth at the Rolex Tournament of Champions with a 214 (67-72-75). In 2014, he won the AJGA BBCN Bank Junior Championship at 206 (68-70-68) and was fifth at the L.A. Junior Open.
PERSONAL: Tanabe is majoring in psychology.
