BREAKDOWN: Chimezie Metu is a 6-foot-11, 225-pound junior forward who affects the game on both ends of the court. His athleticism and length makes him especially impactful on the defensive end. Ranks seventh all-time in blocked shots by a Trojans with 109.
2016-17: Metu started all 36 games and averaged 14.8 points and 7.8 rebounds. He was named the 2017 Pac-12 Most Improved Player, All-Pac-12 second team and All-Academinc honorable mention. He had at least six rebounds and 10 or more points in 27 of 36 games and posted six double-doubles. He scored in double figures in 31 of 36 games, including five games of 20 or more points. His 534 points scored tied for the 15th-most in a single season by a Trojan and the most since Nikola Vucevic scored 582 in 2011. He averaged 16.9 points and 8.2 rebounds in USC’s final 13 games. He scored 15 points and 11 rebounds vs. Omaha on Nov. 13...also tied career high with five blocks. He scored 14 points, had nine rebounds and his dunk with 17 seconds left put USC ahead 64-63 in a 65-63 win at Texas A&M on Nov. 18. He notched 19 points and 13 rebounds at San Diego on Nov. 30. 2015-16: Metu played in all 34 games and made two starts, averaging 6.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, while leading the team with 50 dunks. His 54 blocks also led the Trojans and were second all-time by a USC freshman to Taj Gibson's 69 in 2007. He served notice in his first collegiate game vs. San Diego on Nov. 13, scoring five points, grabbing five rebounds and blocking five shots in 19 minutes of action off the bench. He again had five blocks, five rebounds and eight points vs. New Mexico on Nov. 21. He scored 16 points and have five rebounds on Dec. 17 vs. Cal Poly. Made his first start on Dec. 23 vs. Lafayette and scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Scored a career-best 21 points and had eight rebounds at UCLA on Jan. 13. He started again at California on Feb. 28, but went 0-for-7 from the floor. Registered his first career double-double with 10 points and a career-best 11 rebounds vs. UCLA on March 9 in the Pac-12 Tournament first-round game. Played 10 minutes in USC's NCAA Tournament first-round game vs. Providence and had two rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal.
HIGH SCHOOL: Metu was named a John R. Wooden Award winner as the CIF Southern Section Division II Player of the Year as he averaged 18 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks per game. He led Lawndale High to the CIF-SS Division 2AA final where they lost a heartbreaker in double-overtime to Canyon of Anaheim. In that game, Metu scored 24 points, had 16 rebounds and blocked five shots. Lawndale also advanced to the Division II Southern California Regional final where it lost to La Mirada. . Metu was also named first-team CIF-SS Division II, Division II All-State and was second in the California Division II Player of the Year voting, as well as being named the Pioneer League MVP. Metu is a consensus top 50 recruit, ranked the No. 31 prospect in the 2015 class by Scout.com, No. 47 by Rivals.com and No. 48 by ESPN.com. Metu, originally from Nigeria, played at the 2014 NIKE Global Challenge for Nigeria and averaged 16 points and 9.8 rebounds, while recording seven assists and six blocks in the four games to earn All-Tournament selection.
PERSONAL: Chimezie was born on March 22, 1997 in Los Angeles. His parents names are Florence and James Metu. Metu had offers from schools all over the country including, UConn, Oregon, Arizona State, Creighton and Harvard. He is a Law, History and Culture major at USC.
