Austin Overn Breaks Triples Record But Trojans Fall in Opener to Bruins
April 21, 2023 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES, CA -- Freshman Austin Overn broke the USC single-season triples record, recording his 11th and 12th triples of the year in the game, but the USC baseball team fell in the series opener to No. 22 UCLA 9-3 on Friday night at Dedeaux Field.
In front of a crowd of more than 2,000, Overn tripled to lead off the first and fifth innings, surpassing the USC record set by Grant Green in 2007 with his first triple of the day.
Junior Tyler Stromsborg (4-3) started and took the loss on the mound for USC (22-14-1, 9-7). Sophomore Josh Blum was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out three.
Overn scored both times he tripled and was driven in by freshman Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek each time. Senior Connor Aoki put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a double. Junior Ryan Jackson also contributed for USC, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans were trailing 1-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Overn came across to score the lone run of the inning for USC and get them on the board.
The Bruins broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the second inning, when the Trojans got back on the scoreboard. USC scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Jackson, which tightened the Bruins lead to 5-2.
USC held the Bruins off the board before narrowing the gap to 5-3 in the fifth. The Trojans were unable to get any closer, as UCLA added four runs to their tally on the way to a 9-3 final.
