April 28, 2020 | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving, Features
97 Participants from around the world join together to honor the Trojans.
During this age of social distancing to avoid the spread of coronavirus, the USC Trojans held their annual team banquet virtually, bringing together the entire team, coaches, support staff, parents and friends of the program through a Tuesday afternoon Zoom call. Also on the call were former USC Swim greats including All-Americans John Naber, Dan Jorgensen, Thomas Farhner and Jeff Float.
While the event didn't completely mirror previous years' experiences, the 60-minute gathering provided many of the same elements with awards and thank you's all around. There were 97 participants from around the globe including from as far away as Greece, Sweeden, Croatia and Australia.
The afternoon was filled with surprises for student athletes. Special guest presenters included former USC swimmer and Emmy Award winner Timothy Olyphant, USC Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Matt Leinart as well as fellow Trojan signal caller and Rose Bowl winner Mark Sanchez, Kings of Leon drummer Nate Followill, Sports Illustrated cover model Camille Kostek, YouTube star Zach King, musician and USC grad Zhu and ESPN host and former USC swimmer Ashley Brewer.
Two swimmers and one diver were recognized as the team MVP's. Senior Louise Hansson represented the women's swim team, sophomore Alexei Sancov for men's swimming and senior Henry Fusaro for diving.
During the competitive season, Hansson became a 19-time All-American, 12-time Pac-12 Individual Champion and was set to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for Sweden prior to their postponement.
Sophomore Alexei Sancov led the men's team throughout the season in dual meet and invitational scoring, breaking two school records while at the 2019 Art Adamson Invite (200Y IM, 200Y Fly).
Senior Henry Fusaro represented the diving team as the most valuable player. The winner of this years Pac-12 Swim/Dive Scholar Athlete of the year award and a top finisher at the 2020 Pac-12 Diving Championships, Fusaro led USC at both the Trojan and Utah Diving Invitationals.
Other awards announced Tuesday were:
Team parents virtually recognized the 15 seniors (Joao Ama, Mark Jurek, Matt McDermott, Thomas Reed, Henry Fusaro, Caleb Dixon, Brad Dalrymple, Louise Hansson, Hanni Leach, Tatum Wade, Carly Souza, Piper Brockley, Abby Miller, Catherine Sanchez and Naomi Gowlett) on the team for their contribution to the program.
The team also honored Coach Dave Salo, who just wrapped up his final year with USC after 14 seasons with the Trojans. Salo was named the 2019-2020 Pac-12 Women's Swimming Coach of the Year.
