THIS SEASON: Matt McDermott, a 2020 senior, has improved each year as a breaststroker and IM'er for the Trojans while also working hard as one of USC’s top students in the classroom.
2019: McDermott again competed at the 2019 Pac-12 Championships as a junior, finishing 23rd in the 100y (56.40) and 200y breast (2:00.25) and the 200y IM (1:50.34, 1:49.96 in prelims, PR) … At the Texas Invitational, he was 22nd in both the 100y breast (56.78) and the 200y breast (2:01.96) … After the season, he competed in the Speedo Champions Series in Santa Clarita and took first in the 200m breast (2:19.83). He was a two-time finalist in the 100m breast and 200m IM at the 2019 Los Angeles Invitational at USC … McDermott repeated as a 2019 Pac-12 All-Academic first team selection.
2018: McDermott made his Pac-12 Championships debut as a 2018 sophomore, finishing 23rd in the 200y breast (2:03.44), 24th in the 100y breast (57.25) and 30th in the 200y IM (1:52.34) … McDermott earned 2018 Pac-12 All-Academic first team honors.
2017: McDermott provided depth for the Trojans in the breaststroke and IM as a 2017 freshman. He was a frequent dual meet performer who also raced at the Texas Invitational.
HIGH SCHOOL: McDermott prepped at St. John Bosco High in Long Beach, Calif., where he was the 2015 recipient for the St. John Bosco Scholar Athlete of the Year award. He raced at the 2016 American Short Course Championships, taking 10th in the 200y breast, 11th in the 100y breast and 15th in the 200y IM. He finished fifth in 200y free at the 2015 American Short Course meet and also raced in the 100y 200y breast. He raced in both the 100m and 200m breast at the Speedo Junior Nationals ... He swam at the 2016 USA Swimming Futures Championships and reached the semis of the 200m breast.
