The Women of Troy won the first set, but couldn’t overcome the fourth-ranked Longhorns on the road
AUSTIN, Texas – The 14th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (1-1) won the first set, but surrendered the next three in a four-set loss (23-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-21) to fourth-ranked Texas (2-0) at Gregory Gymnasium on Sunday, Sept. 1.

- Sr. OH Khalia Lanier led the Trojans with 16 kills (6e, 37att) on a .270 hitting percentage. Lanier also tallied nine digs and had two service aces. Her two aces move her career total to 108, which ranks seventh all-time in school history.
- In her first collegiate start, Fr. OH Kalen Owes totaled 10 kills (6e, 23att, .174) to go with six digs, two blocks, and an ace.
- Sr. MB Jasmine Gross had seven kills (1e, 14att) and a .429 hitting rate to go with two blocks.
- For the Longhorns, Logan Eggleston (16), Skylar Fields (14), and Micaya White (12) all reached double-digit kills. Eggleston also had five digs and served five aces.
- The score was tied 10 times, but the Women of Troy forced the fifth and final lead change to snag a 25-23 win in the opening frame. Lanier (6) and Botkin (4) combined for 10 kills in the first set as the Trojans hit .290 to start.
- Texas came out and grabbed a quick 7-0 lead, but the Trojans fought to get back into striking distance. USC closed the gap to five points, but couldn't come all the way back in a 25-18 loss.
- The Trojans took a brief lead in the third frame, but the Longhorns used a 6-1 burst to pull away, en route to a 25-17 win for a 2-1 lead in the match.
- In a closer fourth, the Trojans led several times but again Texas put together short runs to get in front by four at 20-16. USC trimmed the lead to two points, at 22-20, but the last Longhorn run sealed a 25-21 win.
- The Women of Troy are on the road again next weekend when they head to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for three matches in the UNI Tournament. USC takes on Kentucky on Friday (Sept. 6) and then will play twice on Saturday (Sept. 7) against host Northern Iowa and Creighton.
- USC fell to 5-5 all-time against Texas in the 10th schools' meeting. The Longhorns have won three straight matches.
- USC drops to 30-5 all-time in matches played in the state of Texas and to 40-6 against teams from the state of Texas.
- The Trojans started three freshmen. MB Madison Horin got her second start. OH Kalen Owes got her first collegiate start at the opposite position and libero Keila Barra donned the jersey in her first start.
