Senior Khalia Lanier scored 40.5 points in a five-set win over Arizona State
TEMPE, Ariz. – The USC women's volleyball team (17-12, 11-8 Pac-12) defeated Arizona State (16-14, 8-11) in five sets (25-19, 28-30, 20-25, 25-19, 15-5) at Desert Financial Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 27.

- Sr. OH Khalia Lanier led all players with 40.5 points (her second-career 40-point match) and did her damage from all over the court with 33 kills to tie the 11th-highest total in school history (a mark she has reached three times and surpassed once). Lanier hit .304 in the match (9e) on 79 swings and had six service aces and three blocks. She also had 10 digs to post her ninth double-double of the season (43rd career) and now has 1,985 career kills heading into the regular-season finale.
- So. setter Raquel Lázaro dished out 48 assists and had a season-high 20 digs for her 19th double-double of the season (31st career). She also had four kills (1e, 6att, .500) and had three blocks and a service ace.
- Sr. MB Jasmine Gross scored eight kills (0e, 20att, .400) and had eight blocks (two solo).
- Fr. MB Madison Horin had 11 blocks—four solo—to set new career marks and added two kills in the match.
- For the Sun Devils, Ivana Jeremic led with 16 kills; Andrea Mitrovic had 15 kills, and Jada Burse had 11. Callie Jones had 20 assists and four digs while Noa Miller picked up 15 assists and 11 digs for the double-double.
- USC led by as many as seven points in the first set and used eight blocks to roll away with a 25-19 win. The Trojans also scored points on nine kills and a service ace but the defense stood out at the outset.
- Facing a four-point deficit at 22-18, the Sun Devils mounted a comeback to force the Trojans into extra points. USC went ahead several times but ASU took set point at 27-26 and 29-28 before a Devil kill sealed a 30-28 win. ASU carried its momentum into the third set and led, 5-1, early on. The Trojans earned a 14-all tie, but the Sun Devils stepped on the gas to run away with a 25-19 win and went on top, 2-1, in the match.
- The Trojans responded in kind in the fourth and opened up a 10-point lead at 15-5 behind strong hitting. USC was unrelenting and took a 21-9 lead, but Arizona State chipped away at the lead to make it a five-point score at 24-19 thanks to a 6-1 run. Out of a timeout, Gross secured the set and sent the match to the fifth with her kill.
- Arizona State led, 2-1, in the fifth, but an incredible 11-1 USC run opened up a 12-3 lead for the Trojans. Lanier herself had six kills and four service aces through that run. The Sun Devils scored two more points, but freshman Kalen Owes locked down the fifth with two kills and helped the Trojans escape the desert with the win.
- The Women of Troy close the regular season on Friday (Nov. 29) at Galen Center as hosts to crosstown rival UCLA (17-11, 12-7). The rivalry match will be shown live on Pac-12 Los Angeles with first serve set for 7 p.m. PT. USC will celebrate its senior class in pre-match ceremonies set to begin at 6:45 p.m. PT.
- USC improved to 71-14-1 all-time against Arizona State. It was the 14th five-set match between the Trojans and the Sun Devils. USC improved to 10-4 in five-setters against ASU (7-3 when played in Tempe).
- The Trojans extended their school record and played their 11th five-set match of the season. USC improved to 4-7 in five-set matches in 2019 and to 140-90 all-time (61-45 in road matches).
- The Women of Troy improved to 56-25 all-time in the state of Arizona.
