USC Women Make Late Rally But Fall Short At Arizona
January 25, 2019 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans take a 71-68 loss to the Wildcats in Tucson.
TUCSON, ARIZ. — The USC women's basketball team staged a late rally to cut down a double-digit deficit, but came up just short of host Arizona with a 71-68 loss to the Wildcats tonight in Tucson. USC had led by 10 points during the second quarter before Arizona made its winning move with a big third quarter, leaving USC in a battle to take it down to the wire in the fourth. The loss moves USC to 11-7 overall and to 1-6 in Pac-12 play, while Arizona goes to 14-5, 4-4.
By halftime, USC junior Minyon Moore had pulled even on the career charts with Trojan great Cynthia Cooper, who posted 381 assists in her illustrious USC career. Moore's fifth assist of the first half knotted her up with Cooper in the USC history books and helped USC along to a 33-28 halftime advantage. USC was shooting at a 45-percent clip to that point, outpacing Arizona's 43 percent from the floor while both teams had landed four 3-pointers apiece. In the third, however, USC hit a scoring slump, coming up empty from 3-point range while Arizona opened up 3-for-3 from 3-point land. The Wildcats made a 10-0 rally into the lead, and would stay a step ahead the rest of the way despite a fierce rally from the Trojans in the final stretch. By the final buzzer, USC had finished up shooting 41.7 percent from the floor while Arizona heated up to 49 percent in the game. The Wildcats also won out on the boards 37-27, and finished 8-of-19 from 3-point range to USC's 6-of-24 outing.
USC received a game-high 20 points from Minyon Moore, who finished up with six assists to take over the No. 9 all-time spot in the USC history books and also crept a point shy of hitting 1,000 in her USC career, now with 999 to her name. Already in the 1,000-point club, Aliyah Mazyck was next tonight with 16 points for USC, while Mariya Moore added 13 points along with four assists and five rebounds. For Arizona, Aari MicDonald matched Moore's game-high 20 points, while Cate Reese added 17 and Tee Tee Sparks had 13. Dominque Byrd had a double-double for the Wildcats with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Arizona landed four 3-pointers in the first frame, but USC countered with a well-balance attack. The Trojans would carve down an early 8-4 deficit by striking in the paint with buckets down low from Kayla Overbeck and Asiah Jones. Mariya Moore and Aliyah Mazyck would land threes for the Trojan cause, and things were knotted up 16-16 after 10 minutes of work. The Wildcats would come up empty from beyond the arc in the second, while the Trojans mounted a 10-0 surge with eight straight points from Minyon Moore coming in that rally, which took USC out to a 28-18 lead with 4:35 on the clock in the second. Arizona tugged the Trojans back to within five by the break, but not before Mazyck landed her second 3-pointer of the game. By the halftime buzzer, USC held a 33-28 lead.
In the third, the Wildcats worked their way into the first lead since the first quarter in answering a three-point play by Mazyck with a their sixth 3-pointer of the night and a go-ahead bucket to sneak ahead 42-40 with 5:32 on the clock. Another 3-pointer from Arizona would follow, making the hosts 3-for-3 to open the second half for a 45-40 advantage. That Arizona rally would grow to 10-0 as USC found itself in a seven-point hole. The deficit would deepen to nine late in the frame before Mariya Moore hit the back end of her free-throw visit to make it 53-45 Arizona entering the fourth. There, the Trojans were able to get back in the game with an 8-0 run sparked by back-to-back threes from Mazyck. Minyon Moore had a bold take to the hoop next, and USC was within five, down 62-57 with 4:50 to go. In the final minute, USC got within three, down 68-65 with 28 ticks to go on another perfect trip to the stripe from Minyon Moore. After Arizona also made good from the line to go up 70-65, Mariya Moore drained a clutch 3-pointer with 23 seconds remaining. Sent to the line, the Wildcats hit one to make it a three-point game, but USC was unable to get off a final look as the hosts emerged victorious 71-68.
