USC Women Take A Tough Loss To No. 16 ASU In Tempe
January 27, 2019 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans fall 68-59 on the road; Minyon Moore hits her 1,000th point.
TEMPE, ARIZ. — The USC women's basketball team was stymied by first-half foul trouble as No. 16 Arizona State moved into the lead in the second quarter and stayed there on the way to a 68-59 victory for the hosts over the visiting Trojans today in Tempe, Ariz. USC carved it to a one-point game early in the fourth and was within four in the final two minutes only to see the Sun Devils hang on from the free-throw line to win it. USC goes to 11-9 overall and 1-7 in Pac-12 play with the road loss. ASU goes to 14-6, 5-4.
USC was paced by a game-high 19 points from Mariya Moore and 14 from Aliyah Mazyck, who knocked down three 3-pointers for the Trojan cause. Minyon Moore would tally her 1,000th career point with her first free throw of the day, and finished up with eight points to go with a team-high eight rebounds and eight assists. All nine Trojans who hit the floor would score in the game, while ASU had 10 scorers on the day. The Sun Devils were led by 11 points apiece from Courtney Ekmark and Kianna Ibis.
USC shot 33.6 percent from the floor down the stretch, outpaced by ASU's 44 percent effort. USC went 12-of-20 from the free-throw line, while the Sun Devils were 20-of-28. ASU edged out USC on the boards 39-38.
USC's tough defense was interrupted by a mounting foul count in the second quarter. The Trojans had moved ahead 18-14 in the first with a well-balanced attack from beyond the arc to pair with stiff D. Aliyah Mazyck, Mariya Moore and Shalexxus had contributed from 3-point land to help get that USC advantage, but in the second the Trojans were whistled for five fouls in under two minutes and had to play more conservative. That helped ASU to a 10-0 surge into the lead before Mazyck stopped the run with a jumper with 5:35 on the clock. She and Moore would work their ways into double digits, while Minyon Moore landed a free throw to solidify her 1,000th career point, and USC found a bit of a groove later in the frame, carving the deficit down to three on a bucket from freshman Jillian Archer in the final minute, leaving it at 34-31 ASU by the halftime buzzer.
The Trojans and the Sun Devils would largely keep pace in the third. When ASU moved ahead 44-38 on a three-point play with 3:39 on the clock, Minyon Moore would pick off a pass to get USC a spark. Jillian Adams and Mariya Moore would punch in back-to-back buckets for USC next, and it was a two-point game at 44-42 entering the final minute of the third. Archer had the last word of the frame with another score, and it was 48-44 ASU entering the fourth. There, the Trojans received an early 3-pointer from Mazyck to make it a one-point game again, but then ASU made a 6-0 surge for some padding. Mazyck would be issued her fifth foul with 3:35 to go with USC down by four, and the Trojans would get no closer the rest of the way while ASU closed things out from the stripe for the final 68-59 win over the visiting Trojans.
USC now returns home to Los Angeles to set up for two more Pac-12 tilts. On Friday (Feb. 1), the Trojans host Washington in a 7 p.m. matchup at Galen Center. Then, USC will take on WSU in a 12 p.m. game on Sunday (Feb. 3).
