USC sends 16 Trojans into A final races, also wins men's 200y medley relay.
Junior Louise Hansson won the 100y fly by matching her school record – tying the second fastest time in history – while senior Carsten Vissering crushed his school record en route to a win in the 100y breast, highlighting 16 Trojans in A finals at the Texas Hall of Fame Invitational on Friday (Nov. 30) in Austin.
Hansson clocked a 49.80 to match her NCAA title-winning time from March, now the second and third-fastest swims in history. She finished 1.91 seconds ahead of Texas' Remedy Rule.
Three Trojans came charging in after her as sophomore Caitlin Tycz posted a PR 52.21 for third while Maddie Wright was fourth (52.37) and Catherine Sanchez fifth (52.49), both with season best B cuts.
Vissering, who has been third in the NCAA 100y breast for two straight years including his USC record 51.28 in March, lowered the record with a 50.88, 0.53 ahead of Texas' Charles Scheinfeld. Junior Mario Koenigsperger took fourth in the A final (52.98) after a PR 52.54 in prelims. Senior co-captain Billy Monjay was 13th overall (54.74).
Senior Patrick Mulcare, Vissering, senior co-captain Kyle Grissom and sophomore Nikola Miljenic closed the evening racing with a win in the 200y medley relay with an NCAA A cut of 1:23.84, the same event the Trojans won at the NCAAs last season. Vissering, however, is the only Trojan back from the title-winning squad. USC's women were DQ'd in their relay.
Senior Alex Valente touched under 46.0 for the first time in the men's 100y fly, taking third in the men's race with a 45.95, just 0.17 out of first. Miljenic finished 10th (47.06), Grissom was 14th (47.57) and freshman Ariel Spektor was 19th (48.07).
Junior Tatum Wade posted a PR 1:44.37 to take third in the women's 200y free. Senior Maddie Meisel was 14th (1:48.76), senior Victoria Toris took 16th (1:49.24) and senior Allie Wooden was 21st (1:50.50).
Freshman Alexei Sancov finished sixth in the men's 200y free final with a 1:34.22, making him the seventh fastest Trojan ever in the event. Freshman Owen Kao (1:38.22) and junior Thomas Reed (1:38.64) finished 21st and 23rd, respectively.
Senior Riley Scott finished second (59.99) in the 100y breast, just 0.13 out of first. Sophomore Maggie Aroesty hit the wall third (1:00.31) with Kirsten Vose fourth (1:00.33) and Isa Odgers eighth (1:01.32). All times were season best B cuts, including a PR for Odgers.
Mulcare was fourth in the men's 100y back with a PR 45.90, moving him into fourth on USC's all-time chart. Sophomore Courtney Caldwell led USC's women in 10th (54.28) with junior Abby Miller 19th (55.24).
Odgers, bumped into the 400y IM A final thanks to a scratch to start the Friday session, made the most of it and finished fifth in 4:15.55 to lower her PR by almost three seconds. Senior Elizabeth Stinson was 18th (4:24.68) and Isabella Rongione finished 19th (4:28.10). Senior Walker Bell led the men in the 400y IM in 15th (3:53.94).
