2024: Blockburger won his third Pac-12 400m title with a personal-best time of 44.51 to move into a third-place tie on USC’s all-time list in the event. He then won the Pac-12 200m title with a wind-aided PR of 20.19 (+2.2w). He also anchored the winning 4x100m relay which ran 38.84 to account for 22.5 points at the meet, earning him the Most Outstanding Male Athlete of the Meet Award. Blockburger was also named the 2024 Pac-12 Men’s Track Athlete of the Year. He ran 44.90 to place fourth in the 400m final at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America honors. He also earned All-America honors with USC’s 4x400m relay which placed eighth. After the season, he reached the 400m semifinals at the U.S. Olympic Trials. During the indoor season he had a 400m PR of 46.20 at the Arkansas Qualifier on Feb. 16 to move into ninth on USC’s all-time indoor 400m list. He earned indoor All-America honors with the 4x400m relay which placed seventh at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a time of 3:04.67, which ranks fourth on USC’s all-time indoor relay list. He also ran on the 4x400m relay which ranks as the second-fastest all-time by the Trojans of 3:03.14 to win at the Eagle Elite Invitational on Feb. 10. He also ran on the sixth-fastest 4x400m relay in school history earlier in the season and now has competed on six of USC’s all-time best indoor 4x400m relay teams.
2023: Blockburger placed second in the 400m at the Pac-12 Championships with his best time as a Trojan of 44.80, which ranks eighth on USC’s all-time outdoor 400m list...his streak of two consecutive Pac-12 400m titles was snapped, as he was edged by teammate William Jones. Blockburger was injured following the Pac-12 Championships and could not run at the NCAA Championships. He set his indoor 400m PR of 46.58 in placing second at the Arkansas Qualifier running 46.58 on Feb. 17, which moved him to ninth on USC’s all-time indoor 400m list. He also recorded a personal best in the 60m at the Cougar Classic, running 6.83 in the prelims on Jan. 13. He anchored USC’s 4x400m relay which placed third at the NCAA Indoor Championships to garner All-America honors with a time of 3:03.16, second on USC’s all-time indoor list.
2022:  Won his second consecutive Pac-12 400m title with a time of 45.19 on May 15...also placed 8th in the 200m and anchored USC's Pac-12 title-winning 4x100m (38.60) and 4x400m (3:03.39) relays.  Advanced fifth out of the West Regional in the 400m with a season-best time of 45.14 on May 27.  Ran the anchor leg for USC's 4x100m relay which won the NCAA title and set the USC record with a time of 38.49 on June 10...also anchored the 4x400m relay which placed second with a time of 2:59.98, which ranks second on the Trojans' all-time list. Ran his 200m PR of 20.67 (+0.8) to place second at the Trojan Invitational on March 19.  Reached the semifinals in the 400m at the USATF Championships and finished 13th with a time of 45.67 on June 24.PRIOR TO USC:  Blockburger was the 2021 Pac-12 400m dash champion with a time of 45.57 and was named the Pac-12 Men’s Freshman of the Year.  He set the Arizona school record and posted a personal-best time of 44.71 to win the 400m title at the Jim Click Shootout on April 10.  He also had PRs of 10.28 in the 100m and a then-PR of 20.70 in the 200m during the 2021 season. Blockburger ranked No. 6 among NCAA runners in the 400m during the regular season and was the only freshman to run a sub-45.0 time in the 400m dash.  Blockburger was called “the 400m Find of 2021” by Track and Field News and finished 12th in that distance at the NCAA Championships, one of three freshman to reach the semifinals.  Blockburger also qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the 400m.   Ran an indoor season-best 400m time of 46.84 to take first place at the Championships at the Peak … Competed as part of the 4x400 relay team with an indoor season-best 3:09.20.
HIGH SCHOOL: Â Blockburger was a 2020 graduate of Tucson High in Tucson, Ariz. Â He was the 2019 Arizona 200m and 400m champion and placed second in the high jump.Â
PERSONAL: Â Johnnie was born on July 12, 2002 in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Â His parents are Cynthia and Sheldon Blockburger and his twin sister Alyssa is also a sophomore on the USC track and field team. Â His father was an outstanding decathlete, finishing second in 1989 and third in 1990 at the USA T&F Championships, and he served as a USC assistant coach for jumps and multi-events from 2016-18.
