BREAKDOWN: De'Anthony Melton is a 6-foot-4, 190-pound freshman guard. He is a talented offensive player and an elite defender and figures to help the Trojans right away.
HIGH SCHOOL: Melton graduated from Crespi HS in Encino, Calif. in 2016, after having led his team to back-to-back state titles and leaving as the school's all-time leading scorer. He was named the CIF Southern Section Division III Player of the Year. The stat sheet stuffer averaged 20.0 points, 9.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 3.5 steals and 1.2 blocks per game as a senior. Crespi went 33-4 (school record for wins) and defeated Berkeley 68-53 in the 2016 California state title game, to make it consecutive state championships for Crespi...He scored 24 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, had four assists, three steals, two blocks and scored three-straight buckets in a decisive stretch in the win. Melton scored in double figures in 35 of the 37 games, including scoring 25 points or more 11 times. He scored a season-best 30 points in a 59-54 win vs. Viewpoint on Dec. 4. He posted 14 games with double figures in rebounds, with a season-best 18 vs. Alemany on Feb. 8. He was one of three finalists for Mr. Basketball as the state player of the year, was named MaxPrep All-State first team, L.A. Times All-Area and the Daily News Player of the Year. As a junior he helped secure Crespi's win in the title game over Capital Christian by blocking a layup in the final seconds, grabbing the rebound, getting fouled and sack a free throw to secure the 47-44 win. He averaged 15.5 points as a junior. He was ranked as the No. 120 recruit in the country and the No. 7 player overall in California by Scout.com.
PERSONAL: De'Anthony was born on May 28, 1998 in North Hollywood, Calif. His parents are Monique Young and Anthony Melton and he has five siblings. His interests include video games, biking and learning to play the piano. His favorite musical artists are Chance the Rapper, Kendrick Lamar and Kirk Franklin. His sports hero is Russell Westbrook. His favorite food is tacos. Says he would like to travel to Dubai someday. After his playing career would like to be a sports analyst. Is a Communications major at USC.
