BREAKDOWN: Charles (Chuck) O’Bannon Jr. is a 6-6, 220-pound redshirt sophomore guard who will add offensive explosiveness and length at the guard position for the Trojans. He has the potential to take a big step forward this season and is fully recovered from the left pinky injury which cut short his 2018-19 season. He changed his number from No. 13 to No. 5 this season.
2018-19: O’Bannon suffered a left pinky injury in practice on Nov. 9 which would require surgery on Nov. 13 and he used the campaign as a redshirt season. He played 10 minutes in the first game of the year vs. Robert Morris on Nov. 6.
2017-18: O’Bannon appeared in 14 games for USC, scoring 18 points and grabbing nine rebounds. He played in the season opener vs. CS Fullerton on Nov. 10 and had two rebounds and an assist in nine minutes of action. Scored his first points as a Trojan from the free throw line on Nov. 22 vs. Lehigh...He was 2-for-2 in that game and made all seven attempts from the charity stripe he took during the season. Scored his first field goal and added two rebounds vs. Santa Clara on Dec. 14. Played a season-high 14 minutes vs. Princeton on Dec. 19 and had a season-best two steals. Scored a season-high five points, made his first three-pointer and again had two rebounds vs. Akron on Dec. 22. Made his only shot in USC’s Pac-12 semifinal win vs. Oregon on March 9.
HIGH SCHOOL: The five-star recruit O’Bannon Jr. of Las Vegas, Nev. was ranked the No. 28 prospect on the ESPN Top 100 list and the No. 6 small forward in the 2017 class. O’Bannon was a 2017 McDonald’s All-American and scored 10 points, had three rebounds and dished out two assists in the McDonald’s All-American game on March 29 in Chicago, Ill. The All-State wing led Bishop Gorman High to a 22-9 record his senior season while averaging 21.4 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists. O’Bannon helped lead Bishop Gorman to four of its six consecutive state 4A titles, including a 62-58 comeback win over Clark in the 2017 title game in which he scored 36 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
PERSONAL: O’Bannon was born on March 1, 1999 in Long Beach, Calif. His parents are Valencia and Charles O’Bannon. His father was a starter on UCLA’s 1995 national championship team and went on to be a second-round pick in the 1997 NBA draft. His uncle Ed O’Bannon also was a star on the 1994-95 Bruins team and was the ninth overall pick in the 1995 NBA draft.
