BREAKDOWN: Fifth-year senior Rejean “Boogie” Ellis is a 6-3, 190-pound guard who is USC’s top returning scorer and the second-leading scorer in the Pac-12. He transferred to USC after two seasons of playing at Memphis, where he was named the American Athletic Conference Co-Sixth Man of the Year in 2021. He has shown the ability to score by driving into the paint and from beyond the three-point arc and is a strong defender. Scored his 1,000th career point last season and enters the 2023-24 season four points shy of 1,000 points scored as a Trojan. He is one of USC’s captains.
2022-23: Ellis started every game and led USC and was fourth in the Pac-12 with an 17.7 scoring average. Ellis’ 583 points scored were the 10th-most ever by a Trojan in a single season. He also tied for the Pac-12 lead with 83 three-pointers made. Ellis was named to the 2023 Pac-12 All-Conference first team. He scored in double figures 28 times and averaged 22.0 points in his final eight games. He set a career high for points four times during the season. First he scored a then-career best 28 points in a win vs. Auburn on Dec. 18. He then scored 31 points in win vs. UCLA on Jan. 16...his 27 second-half points tied the UCLA team total after the break. Ellis then scored 33 points, by matching a career high with 6 three-pointers and set a new career best with 7 assists vs. Stanford on Feb. 18. Established a new career high in points with 35 vs. Arizona on March 2..also made 6 three-pointers. His 35 points scored vs. Arizona were the most by a Trojan since Bennie Boatwright tallied 36 points on Feb. 16, 2019 at California. His 35-point game also tied the school record by a Trojan at the Galen Center, tying Katin Reinhardt's 35 points vs. Colorado on Jan. 29, 2015.
2021-22: Ellis played in and started 33 games for USC and averaged 12.5 points per game. He led USC with 56 three-point baskets made and connected at a 37.6 percent. He was one of USC’s top two scorers 18 times and scored 14 or more points in 16 games. He led the team with 27 steals. Ellis had a .789 free throw percentage (71-for-89) which ranked 10th in the Pac-12. He scored 20 points in his USC debut vs. CSUN on Nov. 9. Scored 18 points and had career highs in rebounds (8) and assists (6) in the win at FGCU on Nov. 16. Let USC with 16 points, 12 in the second half, to earn MVP of the game vs. Georgia Tech on Dec. 18 at the Colangelo Classic. Led usc with 21 points, including USC’s final seven, in a 58-53 win at ASU on Feb. 3. Scored 21 again and hit the game-winnner vs. Washington State on Feb. 20. Sprained his left ankle on Feb. 23 and missed the game at Oregon State on Feb. 24. Matched a career high with 27 points vs. UCLA in the Pac-12 semifinals on March 11. He score 17 in the quarterfinal win over Washington and was named to the All-Tournament team, averaging 22.0 points in the two contests. Twisted his right ankle leading up to the NCAA Tournament game vs. Miami on March a 18 and was held to 3 points in 14 minutes.
BEFORE USC: 2020-21: Ellis played in all 28 games for Memphis, making 15 starts, and averaging 10.2 points per game en route to being named AAC Co-Sixth Man of the Year. He made 51 three-point baskets and hit at a 38.6 percent from beyond the arc. Ellis finished third on the team in scoring and second in three-point baskets made. He became a starter in February and averaged 12.3 points in Memphis’ final 13 games. He scored 20 or more points three times, including a career-high 27 points in a loss to No. 7 Houston in the AAC Tournament on March 13, making 5 of 8 from three-point range. He was named to the AAC All-Tournament team. He made three or more three-pointers in a game six times, including tying a career-best with six makes vs. Saint Mary’s on Nov. 25, finishing with 24 points in the season opener. Ellis scored a team-high 23 points in Memphis’ 77-65 NIT championship victory over Mississippi State on March 28.
2019-20: During his freshman season, Ellis started 27 of 31 games and averaged 8.0 points and 3.3 rebounds. He finished third on the team with 36 three-pointers made and was second on the team with 39 steals. He scored a season-best 22 points and made six three-pointers vs. UIC on Nov. 8. He had a career-best five steals in back-to-back games, first on Nov. 16 vs. Alcorn State and then on Nov. 20 vs. Little Rock. In the Barclays Center Classic in Brooklyn on Nov. 28, he scored 21 points on 7 of 11 shooting in a win over North Carolina State. Ellis averaged 11.3 points and 4.0 rebounds during the team’s 2019 foreign tour to the Bahamas.
HIGH SCHOOL: Ellis graduated from San Diego Mission Bay High in 2019 as the No. 32 overall recruit according to 247Sports.com. He averaged 18.3 points as a senior. As a junior at Mission Bay High, Ellis averaged 24 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists and was named the San Diego Section Player of the Year. He led his team to the 2018 Open Division title by scoring 34 points vs. Torrey Pines. He led his team to an 18-13 record as a senior and narrowly missed out on repeating as San Diego Section Player of the Year. He averaged 17.2 points and made 46.0 percent of her shots on the 2018 NIKE EYBL Circuit.
