BREAKDOWN: Kijani Wright is a 6-9, 235-pound sophomore forward who is a tough rebounder and defender and plays with a non-stop motor. Wright was a 2022 McDonald’s All-American, the 10th Trojan and fourth of eight in the last seven years to earn the national honor. Won a gold medal and started all six games for Team USA at the 2019 FIBA Americas U16 Championships.
2022-23: Wright played in 29 games off the bench for USC, averaging 1.9 points and 1.8 rebounds. More than half of his 53 rebounds (27) were offensive rebounds, which ranked fifth among Trojans. Wright scored 4 points in the opener vs. FGCU on Nov. 7. He had 3 points and 3 rebounds vs. Alabama State on Nov. 10. He had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 blocks and an assist vs. Vermont on Nov. 15. He scored 4 points and had 5 rebounds vs. Tennessee on Nov. 24. Wright scored a season-best 6 points vs. CS Fullerton on Dec. 7. He scored 4 points on 4-for-4 shooting from the FT line and added 3 rebounds and a block vs. Arizona on March 2. Recorded a season-best 7 rebounds and added 3 points, 2 blocks and a steal vs. Arizona State on March 4. In six minutes of action in USC’s NCAA Tournament game vs. Michigan State on March 17, Wright scored a point, had a rebound, an assist and a block.
HIGH SCHOOL: Wright is a 2022 graduate of high school powerhouse Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth, Calif. He scored 5 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in the McDonald’s All-America game played in Chicago on March 29. He became the 10th USC player and fourth in six seasons to earn the high school honor, joining Evan Mobley, Isaiah Mobley and Chuck O’Bannon. Prior to that, DeMar DeRozan in 2008 was the last Trojan-to-be to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game. He played his first three seasons of scholastic basketball at Windward School in Los Angeles. The five-star recruit is one of the top high school rebounders in the country and was ranked No. 38 by ESPN.com. Wright is a member of the USA Basketball development systems and started all six games for the 2019 USA U16 National Team that went undefeated and won a gold medal in Belem, Brazil. On the AAU circuit, Wright has played for the Compton Magic. He did not play much as a junior due to COVID-19 restrictions, but as a sophomore at Windward School he averaged 13.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game and was named a MaxPreps Honorable Mention All-American, helping lead his team to a 28-8 record and a No. 27 national ranking.
