THIS YEAR: Redshirt junior Christian Johnson is in his third season as a thrower on the USC track and field team. He transferred to USC after a semester at Texas.
2022: Improved over 20 feet in the hammer throw, setting his PR of 218-1 (66.48m) to place sixth at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 16. He placed second in the hammer throw with a mark of 216-10 (66.09m) at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet on April 30...he also took third in the javelin throw (139-11) and fourth in the discus throw (162-10) on May 1. Placed eighth in the hammer throw at the Pac-12 Championships with a throw of 210-10 (64.26m) on May 14.
2021: The season was his first as a thrower for the Trojans, competing in javelin, discus, and hammer throw. He competed in all three implements at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet, winning the javelin throw with a mark of 164-0 (49.99m) and placing fourth in the hammer throw 194-4/59.23m) and fifth in the discus throw (164-7/50.17m). He had a hammer throw PR of 196-10 (60.00m) to place 10th at the Pac-12 Championships. He also competed in the discus throw at the conference meet, but did not land a legal mark.
BEFORE USC: Johnson began his collegiate career at Texas for the 2019-20 season, but transferred to USC after the Fall and did not compete for the Longhorns. He made the Dean’s List in his one semester at Texas.
HIGH SCHOOL: Johnson is a 2020 graduate of Buchanan HS in Clovis, Calif. He had high school PRs of 227-5 (69.32m) in the hammer throw, 191-9 (58.44m) in the discus throw and 60-6 (18.44m) in the shot put. His 227-5 hammer throw mark as a junior ranked fifth in the country among high school athletes and his 191-9 in the discus was 18th. In 2019 he finished second in the discus throw at the CIF state championships with a mark of 179-11 and sixth in the shot put with a mark of 59-3.75. He won the 2019 annual California High School Hammer Championships with a mark of 220-3.
PERSONAL: Christian was born on October 18, 2000…His parents are Zak and Jennifer Johnson and he has one brother, McKay, who also competed with USC’s T&F team…His father Zak was a decathlete for USC in the 1990s…Says his father is his sports hero for inspiring him to attend USC from a young age…Favorite meal is steak and potatoes…Someday would like to travel to Europe…Was a Central California Food Bank volunteer and served as a peer counselor during high school…His major is Real Estate Development and he ultimately would like to go to graduate school.
