USC’s JuJu Watkins Captures Third Big Ten Player of the Week Award
January 06, 2025 | Women's Basketball
She’s Co-Player of the Week after helping lead USC to three conference wins and a 14-1 overall record.
USC sophomore guard JuJu Watkins picked up Co-Player of the Week honors from the Big Ten Conference for her work in helping her Trojans improve to 14-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play with three wins from Dec. 23-Jan. 6. This is Watkins' third Big Ten Player of the Week award, going along with two spots earned on the Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll since USC opened their first season in the conference. She shares this week's award with Maryland's Kaylene Smikle.
Across USC's three recent victories over No. 23 Michigan (78-58) and Nebraska (75-55) at Galen Center and last night's 92-42 win at Rutgers, Watkins averaged 26.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 2.7 steals and 1.7 blocks per game. She also went 28-of-31 from the free-throw line, making a season-high 13 tosses from the stripes vs. the Wolverines en route to her 31-point outing. That gave Watkins her 17th game scoring 30 or more points as a Trojan.
With at least one 3-pointer landed in all three games, Watkins has landed from beyond the arc in 10 straight games, and she's risen to rank No. 18 all-time in career scoring at USC with 1,297 points. She delivered a game-high 26 points on 11-of-12 free-throw shooting vs. Nebraska, and led all in scoring again with 23 points at Rutgers. She also had a career-high 14 rebounds in that win in Piscataway, notching her second double-double of the season and 11th of her USC career. Watkins has now scored 20 or more points in 41 of her 49 career games at USC.
USC's 14-1 start to this season is its best since the 1993-94 season, and this is the Trojans' first 4-0 conference start since the 2012-13 season.
Watkins and the No. 4 Trojans now turn to another Big Ten road match, setting up for a top-10 showdown at No. 8 Maryland at 8:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday (Jan. 8) in College Park, Md. That game will be broadcast on FS1.
