Trojans fall to familiar foe Cal at Spieker Aquatics Center.
BERKELEY, CALIF. – USC diver Moritz Wesemann claimed the men's 3-meter competition en route to a school record to highlight USC's efforts against Cal on Friday, Jan. 17.
While Cal claimed both the men's and women's dual meets, USC had a handful of individual event wins against the Bears, including a massive win by Wesemann.
The USC diving graduate student, Wesemann, shattered a record set by Harrison Jones in 2010. The record stood nearly 15 years before Wesemann outscored it by less than one full point. The first-year Trojan tallied 465.20 points, breaking Jones' previous record by just .98. In addition to securing the record, Wesemann also won the event for the Trojans by nearly 78 points. Just yesterday, he won the men's 1-meter competition at the Cal Diving Invitational.
Claire Tuggle turned in a massive individual win for the Women of Troy in the 1000y freestyle, posting a 9:34.50 to claim the event. Tuggle's time was both a season and career best. Marlene Kahler finished third in a season-best time of 9:51.97.
Another bright spot came from Krzysztof Chmielewski, who finished runner-up in the 1000y freestyle in a time of 8:50.60.
USC swept the 100y breaststroke as Kaitlyn Dobler (59.22) and Junhao Chan (51.79) won both the women's and men's respective heats.
Dobler later returned to lead a 1-2 Trojan finish in the 200y breaststroke, clocking a 2:11.33. Ashley McMillan was shortly behind in second in 2:11.98.
Trojan Justina Kozan claimed the 500y freestyle in 4:42.58, while Ella Ristic (4:45.97) and Marlene Kahler (4:50.17) finished third and fifth, respectively.
Sophomore Sanberk Oktar emerged victorious in the men's 200y IM, clocking a 1:45.16 for first.
USC returns to action tomorrow at noon as the Trojans take on Stanford at the Avery Aquatic Center. The meet will be live streamed on ACCNX.
