USC Women’s Basketball Nets 20th Win WIth Defensive 47-43 Victory Over Washington
February 23, 2023 | Women's Basketball
Kadi Sissoko scores 19 and Rayah Marshall adds six blocks to help the Trojans to a key Pac-12 win.
LOS ANGELES — The USC women's basketball team put forth a strong defensive effort to capture its 20th win of the season on a 47-43 victory over visiting Washington tonight at Galen Center. It's USC's first 20-win season since 2017-18, and the Trojans' 10 Pac-12 wins mark their most conference victories since 2011-12. USC is now 20-8 overall and 10-7 in Pac-12 play, while Washington goes to 15-12, 7-10.
It was slow going in the first half on the offensive end as both teams' defenses were stealing the show. USC shot just 22.7 percent in those first 20 minutes, but Washington was cooler at 16 percent from the floor. Rayah Marshall had five blocks in place by the break to help USC lead it 17-11 for halftime. The Huskies were up on the boards 21-15 at the half and would continue to hold court there in finishing up 43-33 on the rebounding front. Neither team shot well down the stretch, as USC wrapped at 28.3 percent to edge out Washington's final 27.6 percent. The Trojans would also go 18-of-23 from the free-throw line to the Huskies' 6-of-6 outing to help capture the key Pac-12 home win.
USC received a game-high 19 points from Kadi Sissoko along with 14 from Destiny Littleton, while Rayah Marshall hauled in 10 rebounds and made those six blocks. Washington was led in scoring by Elle Ladine's nine points on the night.
Staunch USC defense helped keep the Huskies under wraps in the first frame, as the Trojans got three blocks from Rayah Marshall and one from Clarice Akunwafo along the way to building out an 11-2 lead in the first 10 minutes of action after Destiny Littleton opened things up with a 3-pointer. In the next stretch, it was USC's turn to come up cold on the offensive end, although the Trojan defense remained stingy in order to keep the hosts on top, up 17-11 for halftime.
USC's scoring slump would stretch to almost 12 minutes, with its last score from the floor coming at 8:20 in the second quarter before Rokia Doumbia broke the silence with a take to the hoop at 5:48. That bucket snapped a start to the third by the Huskies, who had their first lead of the game at an 18-17 advantage at 6:50. Littleton would follow Doumbia's strike to help USC ahead 21-18, and a 7-0 Trojan rally capped by a 3-pointer from Kadi Sissoko would pull the hosts up to a 28-20 lead with 1:45 on the clock. Washington got a score in the final minute, and USC carried a 28-22 lead into the fourth. Okako Adika wasted no time in planting an early three to crack open the fourth for the Trojans, with a strike from Sissoko tugging the Trojans ahead 33-22 a minute later. Free throws from Littleton and a take from Sissoko stoked the Trojans to a 39-30 advantage with 2:40 remaining. In the final minute, the Huskies followed two Adika free throws that had USC up 44-38 with a quick score and then a 3-pointer that cut the margin to one with five ticks to go. USC would hold its ground from the free-throw line, however, with Littleton knocking down two to make it 46-43 with four seconds left, and then the front end falling for Marshall to net a 47-43 advantage with three seconds remaining as the Trojans held on to win their 20th game of the season.
