No. 15 Women’s Volleyball Falls to No. 23 Creighton

The Women of Troy had three players in double-digit kills against the Bluejays
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The 15th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (2-3) dropped a four-set decision (23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20) to No. 23-ranked Creighton (3-2) in the UNI Tournament at McLeod Center on Saturday evening (Sept. 7). It was the Bluejays' first win over the Women of Troy in seven meetings.

- Fr. OH Kalen Owes led the Trojan offense with 22.0 points and logged her first-career double-double with career highs of 18 kills (7e, 46att, .239) and 15 digs. Owes also served three aces and had two blocks.
- So. setter Raquel Lázaro put up 47 assists and added eight digs and two service aces.
- Jr. OH Brooke Botkin posted her second double-double of the season (14th of her career) with 12 kills and 11 digs.
- Fr. OPP Emilia Weske tallied 15 kills (2e, 32att) on a .406 hitting performance and had seven digs, four blocks, and an ace.
- For the Bluejays, five players reached double-digit kills led by Megan Ballenger (16). Keeley Davis (12), Naomi Hickman (11), Jaela Zimmerman (10), and Erica Kostelac (10) also hit double digits. Zimmerman had the double-double with 10 digs.
- Each of the first three sets were tightly contested and ended in 25-23 final scores. USC used a short comeback to win the first, and also had comebacks in the second and third, but Creighton held the Trojans off to win and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Both teams hit over .400 in the opening frame. USC's 5-0 run at the end of the third pulled it into a 23-all tie.
- Creighton pulled away for a big early lead in the fourth and then broke open the set to lead by eight points at 17-9. The Trojans fought valiantly and trimmed the lead to just three points at 23-20, but the Bluejays slammed the door by taking the final two points in a 25-20 win to secure the match.
- The Women of Troy return to Southern California and will play their first home matches as host of the 2019 Trojan Invitational next weekend (Sept. 13-14). USC welcomes Villanova, Yale, and Howard to Galen Center for the round-robin tourney. Visit USCTrojans.com to purchase tickets.
- USC fell to 6-1 all-time against Creighton. The Bluejays defeated the Trojans for the first time in seven tries.
- The Trojans completed their trip to the Midwest with a 4-2 all-time record in the state of Iowa.
- USC was without starting All-American senior outside hitter Khalia Lanier for the third straight match and without All-Pac-12 opposite hitter Emily Baptista for the fifth straight match to open the season.
