No. 20 USC Battles for Five-Set Win Over Yale

The Women of Troy posted 16.5 blocks to get a hard-fought win over the Bulldogs
LOS ANGELES – The 20th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (3-3) went the distance to get a five-set win (25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-11) over Yale (0-5) at Galen Center on Friday, Sept. 13. The win is the Trojans' third straight home-opening victory as USC moves to 37-7 all-time in home openers.

- Fr. OH Kalen Owes led all players with 20.5 points and posted her second-career double-double with 18 kills (2e, 46att) on a career-best .348 hitting percentage to go with 10 digs. Owes also had three blocks and a service ace.
- So. setter Raquel Lázaro posted her third double-double of the season (15th career) with 52 assists and 11 digs. She also had two service aces, five blocks, and a kill.
- Jr. OH Brooke Botkin logged her third double-double of the season (16th career) on 13 ills and 11 digs.
- Sr. MB Jasmine Gross scored 17.0 points and hit .476 with 12 kills (2e, 21att) and led all players with nine blocks (one solo).
- Fr. OPP Emilia Weske scored 11 kills (3e, 30att, .267) with nine digs, and five blocks.
- For the Bulldogs, Ellis DeJardin (14), Izzy Simqi (12), Kathryn Attar (11), and Rebekah Nemeth (11) each reached double-digit kills. Yurika Boyd led all players with 17 digs. Attar (10) and DeJardin (12) had enough digs each to register double-doubles.
- The Trojans never trailed in the first set and led by as many as five (7-2), but the Bulldogs pulled to within one at 24-23 before USC closed out a 25-23 win. Owes had six kills in the second set, but Yale never trailed en route to a 25-21 win to pull even.
- After the seventh tie score of the third set, USC broke off to get a six-point lead at 23-17. Weske and Owes posted back-to-back USC kills to finish off a 25-21 win for a 2-1 Trojan lead. Yale turned the tables on the Trojans and evened the match at two-all with a burst in the fourth set for a 25-18 win.
- USC was full-throttle in the fifth set. The Women of Troy had three team blocks and a pair of service aces while Owes and Botkin each scored four kills apiece as the Trojans hit .381 (9k, 1e, 21att) in the fifth frame for a 15-11 win.
- The Women of Troy continue the Trojan Invitational with a 10:30 a.m. PT match against Howard (2-7) on Saturday, Sept. 14.
- USC improved to 3-0 all-time against Yale.
- The Trojans improved to 162-37 all-time at Galen Center and to 10-3 in home openers at Galen Center.
- USC put up 16.5 blocks against the Bulldogs; the third time in four matches that the Trojans have reached double digits.
- Yale Fr. libero Maile Somera—daughter of Trojan great Nancy (Hillman) Somera—earned nine digs and three service aces in a match against her mother's alma mater.
