No. 15 USC Drops Four-Set Decision to No. 12 Kentucky

The Women of Troy out-blocked the Wildcats, 13.5 to 6.0, in the loss
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The 15th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (1-2) was defeated in four sets (25-18, 25-22, 24-26, 25-19) by No. 12 Kentucky (3-2) at McLeod Center in the second match of the UNI Tournament on Friday, Sept. 6.

KEY PLAYERS
- Jr. OH Brooke Botkin led the Trojans with 14 kills (7e, 54att, .130) and had nine digs and a solo block.
- Fr. OPP Emilia Weske tallied 10 kills (2e, 30att, .267) and had three digs and three service aces.
- Sr. MB Jasmine Gross posted nine kills (2e, 21att, .333) and had seven blocks.
- So. Setter Raquel Lázaro put up 32 assists and had 13 digs for her 13th-career double-double. Lázaro also totaled a new career high with eight blocks (one solo).
- Defensively, Sr. libero Jenna Adams led the Trojans with 17 digs. Fr. OH Kalen Owes had a season-best 13 digs.
- For the Wildcats, Leah Edmond led four double-digit kills players with 17. Alli Stumler (13), Leah Meyer (12), and Kendyl Paris (10) also reached double-digits. Gabby Curry totaled 31 digs while Stumler posted a double-double with 10 digs.
- The Wildcats scored the first four points of the match. USC closed the gap to two points at 17-15, but couldn't complete the comeback as Kentucky racked up a 25-18 win in the opening frame.
- The Trojans went toe-to-toe with the Wildcats in the second and were tied at 20-all and within two at 24-22, but Kentucky grabbed a 2-0 lead in the match on a Trojan error.
- The Women of Troy led by as many as three in the third set but the Wildcats fought back to claim set point at 24-20 on a kill by Paris. A block by Botkin sparked a 6-0 run with Weske on serve to complete a 26-24 win.
- Kentucky created a big 23-15 lead before USC mounted a comeback to close within four at 23-19. It was too little late for the Trojans who were stopped in a 25-19 loss.
- The Women of Troy face tournament host Northern Iowa (2-1) at 10:30 a.m. CT (8:30 a.m. PT) on Saturday, Sept. 7; and then take on No. 23-ranked Creighton (1-2) at 5 p.m. CT (3 p.m. PT) to complete the UNI Tournament.
- USC fell to 5-2 all-time against Kentucky.
- The Trojans fell to 3-1 and suffered their first-ever loss in the state of Iowa.
