No. 20 USC Falls in Hard-Fought Five-Setter to San Diego

The Women of Troy came all the way back from two sets down but couldn’t finish off the Toreros
SAN DIEGO – No. 20 USC women's volleyball (5-4) came back from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set, but ultimately had a three-match win streak snapped by San Diego (5-4) in a five-set loss (25-18, 25-17, 19-25, 18-25, 15-13) at Jenny Craig Pavilion on Friday, Sept. 19.

KEY PLAYERS
- Sr. OH Khalia Lanier led the Trojans with 18 kills (5e, 42att, .310) and had five digs and a service ace.
- Jr. OH Brooke Botkin recorded 12 kills (4e, 32att, .250) to go with six digs, three blocks, and a service ace.
- So. setter Raquel Lázaro recorded her sixth double-double of the season (18th career) with 45 assists and 12 digs. Lázaro also had two blocks, three kills and a service ace.
- Fr. OPP Emilia Weske collected 11 kills (4e, 29att, .241) and had three digs and a service ace.
- Defensively, Sr. libero Jenna Adams led the Trojans with 15 digs.
- For the Toreros, Grace Frohling led the way with 17 kills and a .464 hitting percentage. Katie Lukes scored 13 kills and hit .290. Three USD players reached double-digit digs led by Annie Benbow who had 18 and a double-double with 10 assists.
- The Toreros were in control for each of the first two sets and were seldom threatened on the way to a pair of wins. USD hit .387 in the first frame and .290 in the second. USC hit only .030 in the second-set loss thanks to five USD blocks.
- USC came back with a vengeance in the third and led by as many as six points on several occasions. The Trojans held the Toreros to a .000 hitting rate and hit .286 themselves. In the fourth, the Trojans put up a .483 hitting rate and USD had five service errors in a 25-18 loss to end up in a five-set match.
- San Diego led the entire fifth frame but the Trojans pulled within a point several times down the stretch. USC thought it had a 13-12 deficit, but an overturned call made it 14-11 for the Toreros. The Trojans saved a pair of match points, but couldn't finish the job as San Diego closed out a five-set win with a 15-13 result in the fifth.
- The Women of Troy remain in San Diego for their second match at the USD Invitational #2 and face Long Beach State (3-7) in their final non-conference contest of the season. The teams will meet at 4 p.m. PT and be shown live on FloVolleyball.
- USC fell to 12-3 all-time against San Diego and has lost two straight to the Toreros.
- The Trojans fell to 46-13-1 in all-time matches played in the city of San Diego.
- The Women of Troy lost to an unranked opponent for the first time since Dec. 1, 2018, when they also fell to the Toreros.
- USC lost a five-set match on the road for the first time since falling to Washington State in Pullman, Wash., on Oct. 19, 2018.
