Hurt, Clarke Lead Trojans to 4-2 Win Over No. 2 Stanford
May 05, 2019 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – Kyle Hurt took a perfect game into the sixth inning and Chris Clarke picked up the eight-out save as the USC baseball team took down No. 2 Stanford 4-2 at home on Sunday to salvage a win in the series.
The Trojans scored on a trick play in the first and got a couple of big hits from the heart of the order later in the game to move to 20-24-1 on the season and 9-11-1 in Pac-12 play. Stanford falls to 34-8 overall and 17-4 in conference action.
Hurt struck out nine batters and walked none on the day, retiring the first 15 batters he faced before giving up a single to lead off the sixth. He stranded the runner there and worked into the seventh before giving up a two-run homer to Will Matthiessen to make it a 4-2 game. Clarke took over at that point and worked around two walks to preserve the lead. Clarke would give up one hit and no runs the rest of the way.
USC jumped out to a 2-0 lead even before collecting their first hit. Blake Sabol and Matthew Acosta each walked in the first, giving USC runners on the corners. Both runners broke on a double steal, with Sabol scoring after the Stanford catcher dropped the ball on the tag. Acosta advanced to third and then scored when the throw from home ended up in left field.
CJ Stubbs plated what ended up being the winning run with an RBI double in the third and then Clay Owens added an RBI single in the sixth.
The Trojans handed Stanford lefty Erik Miller his first loss of the season in the game. Miller entered the day 6-0 with a 2.60 ERA.
