Trojan Rally Falls Short Against No. 2 Stanford
May 04, 2019 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team scored three runs in the ninth and got the tying run to the plate, but came up just short in a 7-4 loss to No. 2 Stanford at home on Saturday night.
USC falls to 19-24-1 overall and 8-11-1 in Pac-12 play, while the Cardinal move to 34-7 overall and 17-3 in conference action.
Matthew Acosta hit a three run homer with one out in the ninth to cut the Stanford lead in half and then a Ben Ramirez single chased All-American closer Jack Little. Clay Owens would work a walk to bring the tying run to the plate, but Stanford's Austin Weiermiller got two strikeouts to end the game.
The Trojans gave up two big innings to the Cardinal, with Stanford scoring four runs on four hits and an error in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead and then adding a three-run homer by Kyle Stowers in the top of the ninth. USC got on the board first with a solo-homer by Blake Sabol in the third.
Isaac Esqueda didn't give up a hit through the first four innings and responded to the four-run fifth by setting down four of the next five batters he faced. Carson Lambert tossed the final 2.2 innings of the game. Stanford's Will Matthiessen got the win after giving up one run and two hits in 7.0 innings of work.
