No. 21 USC Baseball Blasts Rutgers, 11-1, in Seven Innings

Lopez hit two homers on the day and Grant Govel was dominant for all seven innings on the mound as USC moves to 36-12 on the year and 18-8 in Big Ten play. Rutgers falls to 22-25, 9-14. The victory also clinches the Trojans' 10th series win of the season and moves USC's home record to 27-1.
The Trojans had to erase an early 1-0 Rutgers lead, but once the USC bats got going, they never let up. Andrew Lamb homered to lead off the second inning and then Walter Urbon doubled in a run to put USC in the lead for good.
USC added four runs in the third, getting homers from both Jack Basseer and Kevin Takeuchi, and then Maximo Martinez scored on a passed ball to make it 6-1. Isaac Cadena led off the fifth with a triple and Basseer brought him home, followed by Adrian Lopez and Augie Lopez hitting back-to-back homers in the sixth.
Augie's walk-off came with two outs in the seventh inning and was his team-leading 16th long ball of the season. Lopez is the first Trojan since Ricky Oropesa (20) in 2010 to surpass the 15 home run mark in a season.
After giving up a run in the first, Govel settled in and was dominant the rest of the way, striking out five batters while walking none and allowing just four hits. He moves to 9-1 on the season with the win, lowering his ERA to 2.55. Govel has 73 strikeouts to just eight walks on the year.
