No. 21 USC Baseball Finishes Sweep of Rutgers with 12-2 Victory
May 03, 2026 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – The No. 21 USC baseball team finished off a three-game sweep of Rutgers on Sunday, picking up a walk-off, run-rule victory for the second straight game with a 12-2 win in eight innings.
It was once again Augie Lopez who provided the game-ending hit, driving in two runs on a bases-loaded single. USC moves to 37-12 on the year and 19-8 in Big Ten play. Rutgers falls to 22-26, 9-15. The victory also improves the Trojans' home record to 28-1 on the year, the best home record in the country.
Diego Velazquez set the pace early, retiring the first 12 batters of the game in a season-high 4.0 innings on the mound. Velazquez struck out six of the 12 batters he faced before handing the ball off to Andrew Johnson.
Johnson worked the next 3.0 innings, striking out four batters and walking none. The only two runs Rutgers managed were both unearned in the seventh inning. Gavin Lauridsen worked a scoreless eighth.
Isaac Cadena had the hot bat on Sunday, driving in four runs on four hits with a pair of homers. Lopez and Dean Carpentier each drove in a pair of runs on three hits as well. USC put up its 12 runs on 15 hits.
The Trojans scored four runs out of the gate, getting a first-inning homer from Cadena, then put up single runs in the second, fifth and sixth. After a two-run seventh, Lopez capped off a three-run eighth with his single through the left side to bring home Carpentier and Adrian Lopez.
USC now has seven sweeps at home and eight sweeps on the season, extending a total that was already a program record.
