Justin Suh 68 Spearheads USC Comeback, Trojans Make NCAA Final Round Cut

Tanabe 4-under on back 9 to aid USC rally.
Senior Justin Suh fired a 4-under 68 while sophomore Issei Tanabe posted a 4-under back 9 as the No. 9 USC men's golf team rallied from a tie for 23rd to 15th – by one stroke – to make the final round cut at the 2019 NCAA Men's Golf Championships on Sunday (May 26) at the Blessings G.C. in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Trojans, trying to advance to their fourth NCAA Championships match play in the last five years, gave themselves a shot by clawing their way into Monday's final round at 36-over 900 (304-304-292), one better than 16th-place No. 2 Arizona State.
"What a great day for these guys," USC head coach Chris Zambri said. "This team has been in a very tough spot two weeks in a row and has come through big time both times. Now we need to do it for three more days."
It took a par by Suh on 18 to extend USC's season by a round. He sent his approach shot to within 23 feet of the pin and made his two-foot par putt.
His 68 was his 21st on the season, tying his school record set last year. He is still in contention for the individual title, tied for fifth at 2-under 214 (71-75-68), five back.
"I didn't know exactly where we stood," Suh said. "By 18 that's when I knew that par was going to get us there. I hit that shot and Coach looked at me and said 'all you need is good speed' and I said okay I can do that. That is something I am really good at.
"Gosh, I'm so happy that our team got in. On 18 I hit a drive that I thought was good and it kind of got a little close to the edge of the bunker. I hit it (his next shot) right where we were aiming and it had good speed for par."
USC, in their 12th nationals appearance in 13 years, tied for the seventh best round today and needed every made putt.
Tanabe did his part. Tied for 119th at 18-over 234 (82-79-73), he found his groove on the back 9 today after a 5-over start. He birded 10 to get to 4-over and got three in a row between 13 and 15 before closing with three pars.
"I just had to be patient," Tanabe said. "After I made a birdie on 10, I knew I had a chance to do well on the back."
Sophomore Kaito Onishi is tied for 65th at 10-over 226 (79-73-74). He turned at 1-over with two birdies on 1 and 6 and got back to even with a birdie on 13 before a triple on 14. He stayed the course, and closed with two birdies before a bogey on 18.
Freshman Charlie Reiter is tied for 88th at 13-over 229 (75-77-77), posting his lone birdie today on 10, but getting just enough out of his round today. Junior Kyle Suppa got the start today ahead of senior Sam Kim and carded an 8-over 80.
