Justin Suh, Sam Kim fire 2-under 69s to lead Trojans Wednesday.
Seniors Justin Suh and Sam Kim fired 2-under 69s while sophomore Kaito Onishi carded a 1-under 70 as the No. 7 USC men's golf team made up a five-stroke deficit to start the third round and claimed the fifth and final spot into nationals out of the 2019 NCAA Austin Regional on Wednesday (May 15) at the University of Texas G.C.
The Trojans turned in the third-best round of the day at 2-under 282 to jump from sixth to fifth, finishing at a combined 8-over 860 (290-288-282), five strokes clear of Arkansas, which started the day fifth. Host Texas ran away with the regional at 25-under 827 while TCU was second (847). Clemson was third (851) and Pepperdine fourth (858).
USC earned a return trip to the NCAA Championships final field after missing it last year to break an 11-year run. The Trojans have now qualified for nationals 12 times in 13th-year head coach Chris Zambri's tenure.
"It was an amazing round," Zambri said. I'm so proud of these guys. They played some truly great golf under the gun. Now we need to regroup and get ready for the finals."
The Trojans' deficit to start the day initially grew as the Razorbacks got off to a quick start. But USC, led by Suh's 3-under start, was down four strokes with all players through the turn.
Kim birdied 1 and 2 while Suh and sophomore Issei Tanabe birdied 6, helping the Trojans claw into fourth briefly while Arkansas – paired with USC -- started losing strokes. USC finished the final two holes at 3-over, but had enough of a cushion to hold onto fifth.
Kim led USC all week and finished fifth at 4-under 209 (69-71-69) for his best result as a Trojan and first top 10. He posted two rounds under 70 in the same tournament for the time at Troy.
"I'm really proud of the team for sticking together today," Kim said. "Coming up short last year really put a dent on us and I believe that's what helped us push through this time."
Suh tied for 11th at 1-under 212 (71-72-69), today's round giving him 20 under 70 this season, just one off his school record set last year. He also now has 27 rounds of par or better in 34 outings while his finish marks his 11th top 15 in as many tournaments.
Onishi tied for 34th at 8-over 221 (78-73-70), shaking off struggles from Monday and Tuesday for a clean round with two birdies and one bogey.
Tanabe tied for 38th at 9-over 222 (76-72-74). Freshman Charlie Reiter replaced junior Kyle Suppa in today's final round and carded a 6-over 77.
USC will return to action in the NCAA Championships finals, May 24-29, at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
