Louise Hansson Pac12 Title In 200 Fly Comes With Nation's Top Time

Junior Louise Hansson posted the fastest time in the country to win the 200y fly for her third title of the week, leading 10 Trojan A finalist Saturday (March 2) on the final night of the 2019 Pac-12 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way, Wash.
USC finished third place with 1183.5 points, marking the ninth time in the last 10 years the Trojans have finished top 3 or better at the Pac-12 Championships after Friday's action. Stanford won the team title with 1775 points while Cal was second (1352). Arizona State took fourth (932.5) and was followed by Arizona (837), UCLA (835), Utah (531.5), Washington State (284.5) and Oregon State (172).
Hansson, who won the 200y IM Thursday and the 100y fly Friday, blasted a 1:50.68 to win the 200 fly with in the fifth fastest time ever. She also broke Trojan legend Katinka Hosszu's school record of 1:51.02 in the process.
The last Trojan to win three conference titles in the same season was Hosszu, who did it in 2012 and 2011. Like Hansson, she also captured the 200y fly and 200y IM both years, but won the 400y IM in 2011 and the 200y free in 2012. Hansson's 200 fly win is the first since Hosszu won it three straight times (2010-12) and USC's eighth overall in the event.
Senior Maddie Wright joined Hansson on the podium after finishing third in 1:53.31 in her fourth career A final in the 200 fly and her third top 4 in the race. Rounding out USC's 200y fly was junior Catherine Sanchez who, in her second A final in the race, finished eighth in 1:56.53. Sophomore Caitlin Tycz won the B final in 1:55.59, a time that would have been sixth in the A final. Freshman Makenna Turner was 15th (1:58.35).
USC turned in a strong 100 free A final, freshman Laticia Transom taking fourth in season-best 48.14. Sophomore Marta Ciesla, in her first A final in the event, tied for fifth (48.25) and freshman Jemma Schlicht was seventh (48.56) in another season best. Junior Tatum Wade was second in the B final in 48.79.
Senior Riley Scott finished second in the 200y breast in 2:07.78, 0.71 out of first, her remarkable eighth top 2 in as many finals in the 100 and 200 breast at Pac12s. Junior Kirsten Vose, in her ninth career A final in as many chances, was sixth (2:09.17) while freshman Isa Odgers finished eighth (2:11.62). Sophomore Maggie Aroesty was third in the B final in 2:11.26.
Junior Naomi Gowlett, in her fifth career conference final, finished a career best second on platform with 252.30. It was USC's best result on the board since Haley Ishimatsu won the event in 2015 and the Aussie junior was just four points out of first. Junior Carly Souza was eighth with 203.00.
"It was a strong Pac-12 Championships by the Trojans," USC Coach Dave Salo said. "I am really proud of this team coming together over the last few days to finish with a strong third-place performance. We will have a strong and formidable group swimming at the NCAA Championships coming up in two weeks to close out the season.
"We had great leadership from Louise Hansson and Riley Scott and Kirsten Vose, along with Maddie Wright who all threw down some great swims the last few days."
The Trojans closed the meet with a third in the 400y free relay as Hansson, Schlicht, Transom and Ciesla finished in 3:13.10.
Seniors Elizabeth Stinson (16:15.77) and Allie Wooden (16:30.72) scored USC's first points of the night, finishing ninth and 14th, respectively, in the 1650y free. Junior Hanni Leach was next on the scoreboard for USC, finishing 18th in the 200y back in a season-best 1:57.31. Senior Madi Witt was 11th on platform (199.10) while freshman Alyson Tam was 15th (229.20).
