USC rolls up its 30th consecutive win in improving to 14-0 on the year.
IRVINE, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC women's water polo team kicked off the Barbara Kalbus Invitational by picking up a 13-5 win over No. 25 San Diego State this morning in Irvine, Calif. The Trojans' 30th consecutive win sends the top seeds into an 8 a.m. matchup against either No. 8 Arizona State or No. 9 UC Santa Barbara tomorrow morning to wrap group play and decide who'll move into the afternoon's semifinals. USC is now 14-0 overall on the season.
The Trojans drilled out the first fit goals of the game, with Denise Mammolito delivering two in that early rally. By the end of the first, Mammolito had five other Trojans on the scoresheet with her, as USC gripped a 7-1 lead over the Aztecs after eight minutes of action. By halftime, Elise Stein had her hat trick in place, punching up two more goals in the second to counter a 5-meter penalty shot converted by San Diego State. Alejandra Aznar added a goal as well to help USC go up 10-2 at halftime.
That would wrap Amanda Longan's time in the cage and bring up Holly Parker for the second half. Parker held it down tight in the third, shutting out the Aztecs while Sabrina Garabet got on the scoresheet to nudge USC ahead 11-2 entering the fourth. There, Kari Jensen drummed up two goals, and the Trojans would close out the game with a 13-5 victory in the books.
Tomorrow (Feb. 23) brings a morning match to decide the winner of USC's group. Victory in the morning would put the Trojans into a 2:45 p.m. semifinal tomorrow afternoon in Irvine.
