Trojans Fight It Out for Five-Set Victory Over Oregon State

Outside hitter Khalia Lanier moved into second all-time at USC for career kills and into the Pac-12’s all-time top 10
LOS ANGELES – The USC women's volleyball team (16-11, 10-7 Pac-12) earned a five-set win (25-14, 25-21, 21-25, 23-25, 15-13) over Oregon State (9-19, 3-14) at Galen Center on Thursday evening, Nov. 21.

- Sr. OH Khalia Lanier led the Women of Troy with her 23rd straight double-digit kills match with 15. She also had 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the season (41st career). Her fourth kill of the match moved her ahead of Alex Jupiter (2008-11) into second all-time at USC in career digs. By the end of the match, she had 1,930 career kills and also ascended into 10th place all-time in Pac-12 history.
- So. setter Raquel Lázaro put up 49 assists and had 12 digs for her 17th double-double of the season (29th career). Lázaro also had five blocks and three kills. She now has 2,620 career assists and moved ahead of Alice Pizzasegola (2,618 assists; 2013-16) into ninth place all-time in school history.
- Fr. OPP Emilia Weske scored 12 kills (3e, 35att) and hit .257 to go with a pair of aces and a pair of blocks.
- Fr. OH Kalen Owes produced 14 kills (4e, 30att) with a .333 hitting percentage and had two blocks.
- For the Beavers, Amy Underdown led with 20 kills (13e, 60att, .117) and picked up a double-double with 10 digs. Haylie Bennett added 19 kills (6e, 36att, .361) with five blocks. Maddie Goings had 15 kills (3e, 34att, .353) and 10 digs. Setter Montana Gubrud had the third double-double for Oregon State with 48 assists and 16 digs.
- The Trojans controlled the first set and ran away with a 25-14 win thanks to six kills from Weske. The Beavers had eight kills but hit .000 in the opening frame. USC went up, 2-0, in the match despite having to fight through 10 tie scores in set two. The Trojans had 15 kills and hit .290 (6e, 31att) but ended the set with back-to-back blocks for a 25-21 win.
- Oregon State's response was unrelenting in the third. The Beavers led from wire to wire and hit .385 with 19 kills (4e, 39att) to seal a 25-21 win. The Trojans got eight kills from Lanier but it was for naught as OSU pushed to the fourth set. Oregon State claimed 17 more kills and used a 3-0 run to flip the scoreboard one last time to claim a 25-23 win and force set five.
- Set five was tied nine times before the Trojans pulled out a 15-13 win on Owes' 14th kill of the match. The Trojans hit .300 and had two service aces in the final frame.
- USC hosts Oregon (7-18, 3-13 Pac-12) on Sunday (Nov. 24) for a 1 p.m. matinee that will be carried live on Pac-12 Oregon.
- USC improved to 57-9 all-time against Oregon State and defeated the Beavers for the ninth straight time. It was only the ninth time the Trojans have played five sets against OSU. USC improved to 6-3 in those matches.
- The Trojans played their ninth five-set match of the season, which equals the most played in a single season in school history (1980, 2007, 2010). USC improved to 3-6 in five-set matches in 2019 and to 139-89 all-time (56-31 at home).
- The Women of Troy improved to 169-40 (.809) all-time at Galen Center.
