USC Volleyball Drops Five-Set Drag-Out Battle with Ducks

The Women of Troy played a school-record 10th five-set match but fell to Oregon at Galen Center
LOS ANGELES – The USC women's volleyball team (16-12, 10-8 Pac-12) lost in five sets (20-25, 27-25, 25-18, 22-25, 18-16) to Oregon (8-19, 4-14) on Sunday, Nov. 24. The Ducks snapped a six-match losing streak and got revenge for a loss to the Trojans in Eugene (Oct. 20) earlier this season.

KEY PLAYERS
- Sr. OH Khalia Lanier led the team with 22 kills (14e, 72att, .111) and picked up 16 digs to log her eighth double-double of the season (42nd career). It was her 24th straight double-digit kills match. She also jumped two spots (Logan Tom, Stanford; Madi Kingdon, Arizona) in the Pac-12 history books as she collected her 1,952nd kill and now ranks eighth all-time. Lanier's 16 digs give her 1,008 in her career as she becomes the 18th player in school history to reach the 1,000-dig plateau.
- So. setter Raquel Lázaro dished out 51 assists and had 15 digs for her 18th double-double of the season (30th career). She also logged another five blocks (two solo).
- Fr. OPP Emilia Weske scored 11 kills without an error (29att) to hit .379 and had seven digs and a block.
- Sr. MB Jasmine Gross scored 10 kills (2e, 23att) and hit .348 to go with six blocks (one solo).
- For the Ducks, Willow Johnson led with 16 kills. Karson Bacon had 12 and Brooke Nuneviller had 11. Nuneviller also had 24 digs to lead all players and picked up the double-double. Ronika Stone had eight kills but hit .000 with eight errors (32att). Stone did her damage in other ways with 11 blocks (two solo) and four service aces.
- The score was tied 47 times and the lead changed hands 20 times through the five-set marathon. USC produced a 16-13 blocking edge and out-hit the Ducks, .159 to .155; but Oregon served seven aces to USC's three and out-dug USC, 92-80.
- Neither team could generate much momentum in the first set and both hit under .050. USC broke the final tie and scored a 25-20 win to with three blocks down the stretch.
- The second set was tied 14 times and the third was tied 11 times. Oregon hit .205 in the second and out-dueled the Trojans for a 27-25 win. Tied at 13 in the third, the Ducks served four aces and used a 12-5 run to close out a 25-18 win.
- USC got six kills apiece from freshman OH Kalen Owes and Lanier to hit .350 and walk away with a 25-22 win in set four. The score was tied 10 times, but a 3-0 run sparked by big USC blocks turned into a 23-20 lead for the Trojans.
- The teams went back and forth some more in the fifth, but Oregon took match point at 14-11 only to see the Women of Troy mount a 5-1 run to turn the tables for USC match point, 16-15. The Ducks responded to score the final three points and sealed an 18-16 victory to hand the Trojans their fourth home loss of the season.
- USC heads to Arizona State (15-15, 5-13 Pac-12) to face the Sun Devils at Wells Fargo Arena on Wednesday (Nov. 27) at 5 p.m. MT (4 p.m. PT). The match will be streamed live on Pac-12+. The Trojans close the regular season on Friday (Nov. 29) at Galen Center as hosts to crosstown rival UCLA (16-11, 11-7). The rivalry match will be shown live on Pac-12 Networks with first serve set for 7 p.m. PT.
- USC fell to 55-14 all-time against Oregon and split the season series with the Ducks. It was only the seventh time the Trojans and Ducks have played five sets and the first time that Oregon has prevailed in a five-set match over USC.
- The Trojans played their 10th five-set match of the season; the most in a single season in program history. USC fell to 3-7 in five-set matches in 2019 and to 139-90 all-time (56-32 at home).
- The Women of Troy fell to 169-41 (.804) all-time at Galen Center.
