No. 25 Eagles Fly by No. 10 USC For Five-Set Victory

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The 10th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (5-3) dropped their second match at the Marquette Invitational in a 3-2 decision (21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 31-33, 15-11) to tourney-host No. 25 Marquette (6-1) at the Al McGuire Center on Friday, Sept. 7.

KEY PLAYERS
- Jr. OH Khalia Lanier logged her fifth double-double of the season (30th career) with 17 kills (7e, 58att, .172) to go with 11 digs.
- So. OH Brooke Botkin also had 17 kills (10e, 52att, .135) with six digs, four blocks, and a service ace.
- Jr. OH Emily Baptista scored 14 kills (2e, 33att, .364).
- Jr. MB Jasmine Gross posted 10 blocks and had seven kills (1e, 15att, .400).
- Fr. setter Raquel Lázaro dished out 46 assists and had her third-career double-double with 16 digs. She also posted six blocks, two service aces, and had a kill.
- On defense, Sr. libero Victoria Garrick led all players with 21 digs and had two service aces. Sr. defender Reni Meyer-Whalley dug up 10 balls and had a service ace.
- For the Golden Eagles, Allie Barber led the way with 29 kills (3e, 55att, .473). Hope Werch had 17 kills (5e, 35att, .343) with 14 digs for a double-double. Lauren Speckman also had a double-double on 38 assists and 13 digs with two service aces. Anna Haak had 12 kills and 10 digs for the third Marquette double-double and served three aces.
- USC broke the eighth tie of the first set and rolled to a 25-21 win, but Marquette turned the tables and did the same thing in the second set to even the match at one set apiece.
- Powered by a flawless seven-kill outing by Barber, the Eagles won set three, 25-21, to go up, 2-1, in the match.
- The fourth set was tied 28 times and went all the way to 33-31 before the Trojans closed out the win to even the match. Botkin and Lanier each collected six kills apiece and USC put up five blocks to hold off the Eagles.
- Marquette broke away for a 9-5 lead in the fifth set, but the Trojans caught up at 10-all. The Eagles stepped on the gas from there and had two kills from Haak and one from Barber to sew up a 15-11 win for the match.
- USC meets Syracuse (2-1) to conclude the Marquette Invitational at the Al McGuire Center on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m. CT (1 p.m. PT). The match can be seen live on the Marquette Volleyball Facebook page.
- USC fell to 1-2 all-time against Marquette and has lost two straight to MU. The win was the Eagles' first victory over a top-10 program since it beat a seventh-ranked USC at Galen Center in 2016.
- The Women of Troy dropped to 6-3 in all-time matches played in the state of Wisconsin.
