No. 10 USC Fights On For Five-Set Win Over Syracuse

USC women’s volleyball sophomore outside hitter Brooke Botkin had a career-high 28 kills in a win over the Orange
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The 10th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (6-3) overcame a two-set deficit to defeat Syracuse, 3-2 (23-25, 25-27, 25-14, 25-14, 15-13), at the Marquette Invitational at the Al McGuire Center on Saturday, Sept. 8. It was the first time the Trojans came back after dropping two sets to earn a win since Nov. 18, 2016, when they did it against Oregon State at Galen Center.

KEY PLAYERS
- So. OH Brooke Botkin set new career highs of 28 kills (6e, 55att), a .400 hitting percentage, and 31.0 points. Botkin also had nine digs, two blocks, and two service aces.
- Jr. MB Jasmine Gross had eight blocks (one solo), eight digs, seven kills (2e, 16att, .312), and served her first ace as a Trojan.
- Jr. OH Khalia Lanier scored 18 kills (8e, 57att, .175) with seven digs, two blocks, and one service ace.
- Jr. OH Emily Baptista collected 11 kills (5e, 27att, .222) and four digs.
- Fr. setter Raquel Lázaro produced 53 assists, seven digs, six blocks (one solo), and two service aces.
- On defense, Sr. defender Reni Meyer-Whalley dug up 10 balls and served three aces. Sr. libero Victoria Garrick had 14 digs, four assists, and a service ace.
- For the Orange, Polina Shemanova led the way with 20 kills (11e, 54att, .167) with 10 digs for a double-double and added three blocks. Santita Ebangwese added 11 kills (3e, 21att, .381), five blocks, and two digs. Jalissa Trotter put up 35 assists to go with 11 digs and added five kills and three blocks.
- USC led once in each of the first two sets, and stayed close to Syracuse, but slipped at the end of each frame to fall behind, 25-22 and 27-25. The Orange hit .438 in the first set and scored 16 kills.
- The Trojans responded with a big third set where they hit .556 and picked up 10 kills (0e) on 18 swings and added four service aces and four blocks. USC put up a 93-percent sideout rate in the third to regain its footing on a 25-14 win.
- The Women of Troy weren't nearly as efficient in the fourth but held Syracuse to a .023 hitting rate to roll away with another 25-14 win and send the match into a fifth and final set.
- The Trojans never trailed in the fifth set but were tied five times before they broke away for a 12-10 lead on a kill by Gross. Syracuse came back and trimmed the lead to one at 14-13, but Botkin scored the final kill of the match to seal the win.
- USC returns to Southern California after several weeks away and heads to San Diego to face Louisiana and USD in the SDSU/USD Challenge at Jenny Craig Pavilion on Friday, Sept. 14.
- USC and Syracuse met for the first time.
- The Women of Troy improved to 7-3 in all-time matches played in the state of Wisconsin.
- USC came back to win after falling behind by two sets for the first time since Nov. 18, 2016 (Oregon State, Galen Center).
