No. 14 USC Takes Down Buffaloes in Five-Set Battle in Boulder

The Women of Troy won their fifth straight match on a 3-2 decision over Colorado on the road
BOULDER, Colo. – The 14th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (10-3, 2-0 Pac-12) won its season-high fifth straight match on a 3-2 victory (25-18, 25-27, 25-19, 21-25, 15-10) over Colorado (9-4, 1-1) at the Coors Events Center on Sunday, Sept. 23.

- Fr. Setter Raquel Lázaro dished out a career-high 58 assists and posted 16 digs for her sixth-career double-double. Lázaro also got in on four blocks on the defensive side of the net.
- Jr. MB Jasmine Gross posted a season and USC-high 17 kills (1e, 26att) with a season-high .615 hitting percentage. Gross also had four blocks and served two aces.
- The Trojans got 40 kills from their left-side pin-hitters. Jr. OH Khalia Lanier scored 21 kills (11e, 58att, .172) and had nine digs and a pair of service aces. So. OH Brooke Botkin posted 19 kills (6e, 36att, .361) with seven digs and a service ace.
- Jr. OPP Emily Baptista posted nine kills (3e, 27att, .222) and put up four blocks (one solo).
- On defense, Sr. libero Victoria Garrick led the team with 17 digs and had six assists and a service ace. Senior defender Reni Meyer-Whalley added a season-high 14 digs with two assists.
- For the Buffaloes, Alexa Smith led the scoring with 18 kills and had the double-double with 15 digs. Anyse Smith 13 kills and Naghede Abu had 12. Brynna DeLuzio posted a double-double with 24 assists and 15 digs.
- The Trojans won the odd-numbered sets and Colorado won sets two and four. In the first, USC broke a 10-all tie on a string of serves by Garrick and rolled to a 16-10 lead. The Trojans maintained their distance and got back-to-back kills from Gross and Baptista to seal the win. Lanier and Gross each had four kills apiece in the opening frame.
- USC overcame two separate four-point holes and claimed set point at 24-22 in the second set, but the Buffaloes closed the frame on a 5-1 run to even the match with a 27-25 win. Gross poured in five more kills in the frame.
- Despite controlling most of the third set, the Trojans allowed the Buffaloes to climb within a point at 18-17. Botkin's next kill sparked USC to a 25-19 win with the last four consecutive points. Lanier scored eight kills to lead USC in set three.
- Colorado ran out to an early 7-3 lead in set four and then led by as many as six points several times. The Trojans closed within two twice, but the Buffaloes evened the match with a 25-21 win to send the match to set five.
- USC claimed the first three points of the final frame and then doubled up the Buffaloes at 10-5. The teams traded points down the stretch as the Trojans emerged with a 15-10 win with a .474 hitting percentage in the final frame.
- USC stays on the road for a pair of Bay-Area Pac-12 match-ups. The Trojans face No. 2-ranked Stanford (10-1, 2-0 Pac-12) at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif., on Friday (Sept. 28). The match will be shown live on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. PT. USC then takes on California (8-4, 0-1) on Sunday (Sept. 30) at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif.
- USC improves to 16-1 all-time against Colorado and to 11-3 in all matches played in the state of Colorado.
- The Trojans reached a new season high with their fifth straight match victory. USC's first-set win was its season-long 13th consecutive set victory.
- The Women of Troy improved to 3-1 in five-set matches played this season.
