UCF Knights Take Down No. 7 USC in Four-Set Upset

The Women of Troy had a four-match winning streak snapped by Central Florida at the Bubly Invitational
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 7-ranked USC women's volleyball team (4-1) dropped a four-set decision (25-18, 26-24, 12-25, 25-23) to unranked Central Florida (3-2) at the Bubly Invitational at Exactech Arena and suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday, Sept. 1. It was the Trojans' first loss to an unranked opponent since Oct. 20, 2017 (Colorado).

KEY PLAYERS
- So. OH Brooke Botkin logged her fourth double-double of the season (fifth career) and led the Women of Troy with 19 kills (2e, 49att, .347) to go with 12 digs and a pair of service aces.
- Jr. OH Khalia Lanier had 18 kills (6e, 50att, .240) with 12 digs for her third double-double of the season (28th career).
- Sr. libero Victoria Garrick set a new career high with 29 digs and matched her career mark with three service aces.
- Fr. setter Raquel Lázaro registered her second double-double of the season on 42 assists and 10 digs.
- For the Knights, three players had double-digit kills including Kristina Fisher (20), McKenna Melville (15), and Anne-Marie Watson (13). Melville had a double-double with 13 digs while setter Erin Olson had 28 assists and 22 digs.
- Each team won one set apiece going away. UCF took the first by a 25-18 score while the Trojans took set three, 25-12.
- The other two sets were won by the requisite two-point margin by the Knights. They took set two, 26-24, and set four, 25-23.
- USC hit .235 and had 50 kills on 153 swings to outpace UCF, which hit .224, but the Knights had 66 kills on 183 swings. UCF also won the defensive game by an 81-78 edge in digs.
- The score was tied 27 times through the match and the Trojans fought, but the Knights scored 23 kills in the fourth set to earn the win on a .404 hitting percentage (23k, 4e, 47att).
- USC concludes its weekend at the Bubly Invitational with a match-up against Louisville (4-1) at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT) at Exactech Arena on Sunday, Sept. 2. The Trojans and Cardinals will meet for the first time and be shown live on ESPN3.
- USC fell to 0-2 all-time against Central Florida (Sept. 2, 2011).
- The Women of Troy dropped to 7-4 in all-time matches played in the state of Florida.
- The Trojans were defeated by an unranked opponent for the first time since Oct. 20, 2017, when it lost to Colorado.
- Central Florida is coached by former USC assistant Todd Dagenais, who was also the coach for UCF in the 2011 meeting.
