USC Takes Series With 9-3 Win at Washington State

USC collects its second straight series win with the victory, moving to 23-23 on the year and 11-16 in Pac-12 play. The Cougars fall to 15-27-1 overall and 7-16-1 in conference action.
The Trojans loaded the bases and walked in two runs to chase Washington State starter Parker McFadden in the second inning. The Cougars would get a run back on a solo home run by Dillon Plew in the third inning, but USC responded with four runs in the top of the fourth.
The Trojans sent 10 men to the plate in the fourth, getting an RBI bunt single by Blake Sabol and successful sacrifice squeeze bunt by Chase Bushor to plate two early runs. Then Stephen Dubb singled home a run and Lars Nootbaar followed with an RBI double.
Blake Clanton hit another solo homer in the fourth for Washington State and the teams traded runs in the eighth. USC added a pair of runs in the ninth on a two-run double by Brandon Perez.
Bates allowed just five hits on the day and struck out seven batters, giving up just the two solo homers during his seven innings. The Trojans' righty has gone at least six innings in four of his last five starts and has tossed seven of more innings three times. John Beller would throw the final two frames, giving up just one unearned run.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Nootbaar recorded a season-high four hits, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
- Sabol went 2-for-4 at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring two more.
- Perez had two hits, two RBI and a run scored.
- Bates tossed 7.0 innings, giving up five hits, two runs and two walks, while striking out seven batters.
- Beller gave up just an unearned run and three hits, while striking out one.
