Trojans Down Anteaters in Gillespie's Final Trip to Dedeaux
May 15, 2018 | Baseball, Features
Gillespie, who spent 20 years (1987-2006) coaching USC and the last 11 years at UC Irvine, will retire at the end of this season. Also a former USC player, Gillespie won a championship under legendary coach Rod Dedeaux in 1961. He was honored prior to the game.
The win moves the Trojans to 24-23 on the year and drops UC Irvine to 29-21. Brian Gursky picked up the victory on the mound in what was the freshman lefty's first collegiate start.
Gursky tossed five scoreless innings, giving up five hits and striking out two batters. He was backed by three runs in the fourth inning that turned out to be all USC needed. The Trojans would add a run in the seventh on a solo homer by Dillon Paulson and then tacked on four runs in the eighth. The Anteaters scored runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
Brandon Perez kicked off the scoring with an RBI double in the fourth and Ben Ramirez singled in a run as well. Blake Sabol highlighted the four-run eighth with an RBI triple as USC sent eight men to the plate and posted five hits in the frame.
John Beller gave up one run in 2.2 innings of relief and Chris Clarke notched his first save of the year after getting the final out of the eighth and working the ninth.
